Assistant Dean of Student Success (Student Services Leader)
Job Summary
The Assistant Dean for Student Success is a 12-month position, with primary responsibility for planning, organizing, managing, and evaluating programs and activities that promote and support student success across all IUSSW programs and campuses in the areas of recruitment, admissions, advising, and career services.
Department Specific Responsibilities
- Reports directly to the Dean of the IU School of Social Work.
- Works collaboratively with senior leadership within the school, and supervises relevant IUSSW area-specific directors (recruitment, admissions, and career services).
- Coordinates and supervises the school's recruitment, admissions, orientation, academic advising, and career services initiatives.
- Provides leadership in the articulation of issues and the development of policies affecting students, student learning, and academic standing (e.g., probation, dismissal, reinstatement, etc.)
- Works with students on an individual basis to address issues that affect their academic success.
- Oversees the school's academic misconduct policies and procedures.
- Articulates issues for consideration at the school and campus levels so that the campus can make improvements.
- Supports faculty, departments, and programs in issues affecting student learning, including recruitment, retention, advising, developing culturally responsive and inclusive curricula, career services, and co-curricular activities.
- Oversees and manages the IUSSW scholarship program.
- Identifies issues and developing policies that affect student recruitment, success, and retention.
- Works with leadership across campuses to facilitate campus-specific initiatives such as study abroad, undergraduate research, service, and experiential learning.
- Represents the School of Social Work and its students interests through service on campus and university-level committees.
- Works with faculty and program directors on an individual basis related to student issues in the classroom.
- Coordinates and manages the Student Awards Program and assist with planning and coordinating campus-level commencement recognition ceremonies.
General Responsibilities
- Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define student services methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high priority student services projects/initiatives.
- Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project/multi-phase student services initiatives.
- Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal.
- Manges high level assignments and allocation of student services resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; may coordinate large-scale student services projects with wide audiences in support of academic, wellness, inclusion, and safety initiatives.
- Makes budgetary recommendations/proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment.
- Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry student services standards, technologies, policies, and procedures; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs.
- Works collaboratively with other student services leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures.
- Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to student services.
