Job Description

Job Summary:

The Assistant Director for Graduate Studies (AGDS) in Data Science is an exciting opportunity for applicants seeking the chance to support and advise master’s students pursuing a degree in Data Science, while also using their domain expertise to contribute to the academic efforts of the program faculty.

The position has several key responsibilities, including: advising students in the Data Science master’s program; playing an integral role in the master's program admission process; and working with faculty to regularly assess and update the master’s program curriculum. This position also includes a non-paid dependent lectureship, through which the ADGS contributes to teaching within the master’s program.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary academic advisor for graduate students in the master’s degree program in Data Science. Advise students about courses and other related matters.
  • Share responsibility for advising PhD students in the Data Science Secondary Field program about courses and other matters related to the secondary field.
  • Teach or co- teach up to two graduate-level courses as assigned annually.
  • Assist with curriculum and course development, including course planning and the implementation of new pedagogical methods.
  • Work with the Data Science program faculty committee in the continuing assessment and improvement of the curriculum in order to stay abreast of the latest developments in computer science and engineering.
  • Help students in the Data Science program find thesis advisors and provide oversight of second year master’s students as they complete their thesis research.
  • Serve as an intellectual mentor and advisor to students in the development of their independent study projects and theses.
  • Collaborate with the Director for Master’s Education to coordinate the reading of applications to the Data Science master’s program; serve as one of the readers during the first round of application review.
  • Advise prospective students who express interest in applying to the Data Science master’s program.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics or another field of science or engineering.
