Notice nr. 1171/2026
Notice is hereby given that, at the Faculty of Arts (FLUL) of the University of Lisbon (ULisboa), for a period of 30 working days from the working day immediately following the publication of this Notice in the Diário da República, a competition is open for the recruitment, under a public-sector employment contract, of 1 (one) Assistant Lecturer in the subject area of Linguistics at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon, in accordance with the provisions of Articles 37 to 51, and 61 and 62. A of the Statute on University Teaching Careers, republished by Decree-Law No. 205/2009 of 31 August and amended by Law No. 8/2010 of 13 May (hereinafter referred to as the ECDU), and other applicable legislation, namely the General Regulations for Competitive Examinations for the Recruitment of Full, Associate and Assistant Professors at the University of Lisbon, approved by the Rector’s Order of 16 February 2015 and published in the Diário da República, Series II, No. 45, by Order No. 2307/2015 of 5 March (hereinafter referred to as the Regulations), in all matters not contrary to the provisions of Decree-Law No. 122/2019 of 23 August, under which this competition is being held.
The successful candidate will enter into a permanent employment contract in the civil service, in the category for which this competition was held, with a probationary period in accordance with the provisions of Article 25 of the ECDU.
Joint Order No. 373/2000 of 31 March, issued by the Minister for State Reform and Public Administration and the Minister for Equality, stipulates that the following statement must be included in recruitment and promotion competitions: “In compliance with Article 9(h) of the Constitution, the Public Administration, as an employer, actively promotes a policy of equal opportunities between men and women in access to employment and career progression, taking scrupulous care to avoid any and all forms of discrimination.”
Accordingly, the terms ‘candidate’, ‘recruit’, ‘teacher’ and other similar terms are not used in this Notice to refer to a person’s gender. In compliance with Normative Order No. 18/2019 of 21 June, issued pursuant to the provisions of paragraphs 1 and 2 of Article 7 of Law No. 62/2017 of 1 August, FLUL promotes a culture of equal opportunities for women and men.
Similarly, no candidate may be given preferential treatment, favoured, disadvantaged or deprived of any right, nor exempted from any duty on the grounds of, in particular, on the grounds of ancestry, age, sexual orientation, marital status, family circumstances, financial circumstances, education, social origin or status, genetic heritage, reduced working capacity, disability, chronic illness, nationality, ethnic origin or race, territory of origin, language, religion, political or ideological beliefs, and trade union membership.
In accordance with Articles 37 to 51 of the ECDU and other applicable legislation, and with the provisions of Article 8 of the Regulations, in all matters not contrary to the provisions of Decree-Law No. 122/2019 of 23 August, the following provisions shall be observed:
1 — Authorisation Order
This competition was authorised by order of the Rector of the University of Lisbon, Professor Luís Manuel dos Anjos Ferreira, dated 8 September 2026, issued following the cumulative confirmation of the following requirements:
a) The existence of adequate budgetary provision;
b) The post advertised is provided for and currently vacant in the teaching staff establishment plan of the Faculty of Arts, and is characterised therein by the requirement that the incumbent must carry out the teaching and research duties assigned to an Assistant Professor.
2 — Place of work
Faculty of Arts, University of Lisbon, Alameda da Universidade, 1600-214 Lisbon, Portugal.
3 — Eligibility requirements for the competition
3.1 — Academic qualification requirements — Holders of a doctoral degree, in accordance with the provisions of Article 41-A of the ECDU.
3.2 — Contractual requirements — To have been employed as a senior lecturer on a full-time or exclusive basis on the date Decree-Law No. 205/2009 of 31 August came into force, and to have continued, from that date up to and including the 2018–2019 academic year, teaching duties at public higher education institutions under a fixed-term employment contract in accordance with the General Law on Labour in the Public Service or the Labour Code:
a) On a full-time or exclusive basis, even if in other teaching categories or at a different higher education institution, or
b) On a part-time basis, even if in other teaching categories, at a different higher education institution or in conjunction with full-time or exclusive-dedication contracts, provided that the gap between contracts did not exceed three months.
3.3 — Holders of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions must have their doctoral degree recognised in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of 16 August, as currently in force, by the deadline set for the conclusion of the contract.
3.4 — The provisions of Chapter VI of the Regulations shall apply with regard to the verification of and compliance with the requirements for the admission and exclusion of candidates.
3.5 — Failure to submit any of the documents required to support the application, within the specified time limit and in accordance with the terms set out below, shall result in the application being rejected; this shall be subject to review and a decision by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts prior to the Selection Panel’s deliberation on the candidate’s absolute merit.
4 — Submission and supporting documentation for applications:
4.1 — Applications must be submitted by email to concursos.docentes@letras.ulisboa.pt within 30 working days of the publication of this Notice in the Diário da República and must be accompanied by the following documents, submitted in digital format and in a non-editable format (PDF):
a) The ‘Application Form for Competitive Selection Procedures: Teaching Staff’ or the ‘Application Form: Assistant / Associate / Full Professor’ available at https://www.letras.ulisboa.pt/pt/sobre-a-flul/administracao-e-servicos/recursos-humanos/procedimentos-concursais, duly completed and signed;
b) A curriculum vitae focusing in particular on teaching experience and relevant activities in the teaching and supervision of modern language courses, specifically Italian language and linguistics, or other subjects within the subject area of the competition, in accordance with the provisions of Article 8(3) of the ECDU;
c) An outline of a lesson or seminar on a topic within the subject area for which the competition has been opened, not exceeding two thousand (2,000) words in length, and covering aspects of the Italian language and linguistics;
d) A sworn statement confirming that the candidate meets the contractual requirements set out in paragraph 3.2 of this Notice (available at https://www.letras.ulisboa.pt/images/faculdade/servicos_administrativos/concursos/declaracao-leitores-concursos-2026.pdf).
4.2 — The documents supporting applications must be submitted in Portuguese or English.
5 — Requirements for admission on the basis of absolute merit
This selection procedure is carried out by means of public competence assessment tests. Admission to the public tests is preceded by a preliminary assessment of the candidates’ absolute merit, which is eliminatory in nature.
5.1 — Admission of candidates on the basis of absolute merit is subject to the fulfilment of all of the following requirements:
a) Holding a PhD in Linguistics, or an equivalent qualification, in any of its branches, with a doctoral thesis on topics relating to the Italian language and linguistics;
b) Possession of a comprehensive curriculum vitae which the selection panel considers to provide well-founded evidence of experience in teaching and in relevant activities relating to the training and supervision of modern language courses, in particular Italian language and linguistics, or other subjects within the subject area of the competition, in accordance with the provisions of Article 8(3) of the ECDU;
c) The relevance of the outline of the lesson or seminar to a topic falling within the subject area of the competition and covering aspects of the Italian language and linguistics.
5.2 — A candidate shall be deemed to have been admitted on the basis of absolute merit if they are approved by an absolute majority of the voting members of the selection panel, following a roll-call vote in which abstentions are not permitted.
5.3 — Preparatory meetings concerning admission on the basis of absolute merit, the allocation of duties and the scheduling of examinations may be held by teleconference.
6 — Public competence assessment examinations
Once candidates have been approved on the basis of absolute merit, public competence assessment examinations shall be held, consisting of:
a) Assessment and discussion of the candidate’s CV, focusing in particular on their teaching experience and relevant activities in the teaching and supervision of modern language subjects, specifically Italian language and linguistics, or other subjects within the subject area of the competition, in accordance with the provisions of Article 8(3) of the ECDU;
b) A presentation of a lesson or seminar on a topic of the candidate’s choice, falling within the relevant subject area and covering aspects of the Italian language and linguistics.
6.1 — The assessment of the CV will focus in particular on the candidate’s teaching experience (30 per cent), relevant training activities (10 per cent) and experience of teaching (10 per cent) modern languages, in particular the Italian language and linguistics, or other subjects within the subject area of the competition, in accordance with the provisions of Article 8(3) of the ECDU.
6.2 — The lecture or seminar will be assessed taking into account the candidates’ familiarity with the chosen topic within the subject area of the competition, with particular regard to the aspects of the Italian language and linguistics (30 per cent), as well as the originality of the perspectives presented (20 per cent).
6.3 — The assessment components referred to above must be consistent with the subject area in which the competition is held and appropriate to the rank of Assistant Professor.
6.4 — The examinations are held in two sessions, each lasting a maximum of ninety (90) minutes.
6.5 — A reasoned assessment of the curriculum vitae is carried out by a member of the selection panel and is followed by a discussion.
6.6 — The lecture or seminar shall last for a maximum of forty-five minutes. A reasoned assessment of the lecture or seminar is carried out by a member of the selection panel and is followed by a discussion.
6.7 — All members of the selection panel may participate in the discussions referred to in the preceding paragraphs, and the candidate shall be allotted the same amount of time as that used by the members of the selection panel.
7 — Ranking of candidates
7.1 — Once the public competence assessment tests have been completed, the selection panel shall meet to assess and deliberate on the final result.
7.2 — The assessment and ranking of candidates must be justified in writing, in individual documents, and must be based on the assessment criteria set out in paragraph 6 of this Notice.
7.3 — When assessing the examinations held, and for the purposes of ranking the candidates in the competition, each member of the selection panel shall rank the candidates in descending order of merit, with each member of the selection panel participating in the voting on the basis of their own ranked list of candidates.
7.4 — In accordance with Article 20 of the Regulations, the selection panel shall first vote for first place, then for second place, and so on, until all candidates admitted to the competition and previously approved on the basis of absolute merit have been ranked. In each round of voting, the jury’s decisions are taken by an absolute majority of votes, and the method for ranking candidates is that set out in Article 20(5) of the Regulations, in accordance with the provisions of Article 17 of the Regulations.
7.5 — Once the application of the assessment and ranking criteria has been completed, the selection panel shall draw up a single ranking list of candidates.
8 — Composition of the jury
In accordance with Articles 45 and 46 of the ECDU and Article 14 of the Regulations, the jury is composed of the following members:

9 — Termination of the competition
In view of the purpose of Decree-Law No. 122/2019 of 23 August, which approved the regulatory provisions governing the transitional regime for readers introduced by Decree-Law No. 205/2009 of 31 August, as currently in force, and within the scope of which this competition is being held, the competition may be terminated should the reader who prompted its launch not stand as a candidate in it.
