The Department of Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Immunology has a strong research focus in both fundamental and applied bacteriology, including antibiotic discovery, antimicrobial resistance, pathogenesis, morphogenesis, bacteria-phage interactions, biofilm formation, DNA replication, genome plasticity, and related areas. Research spans genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, microscopy, genomics, and computational biology.

The department is also affiliated with the Courtois Institute for Biomedical Innovation (CI²B), which brings together more than 50 researchers from the Faculty of Medicine's five basic science departments. CI²B promotes interdisciplinary research across structural and quantitative biology, host-pathogen-environment interactions, and cellular and systems neuroscience. Together with UdeM's affiliated research centres, it provides access to state-of-the-art core facilities supported by highly qualified scientific staff.

Day-to-day responsibilities

Through your undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, and your research activities, you will contribute to the faculty’s pursuit of excellence. Furthermore, you will promote your discipline and actively participate in the daily activities of a renowned institution. As such, you will:

• Develop an independent, innovative, and internationally recognized research program in bacteriology, focusing on areas of interest such as, but not limited to, antibiotic resistance, microbial interactions, bacterial physiology and metabolism, stress responses, cell biology, microbial ecology, and evolutionary microbiology;
• Actively teach at all levels within the Department of Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, and Immunology, as well as in other programs within the Faculty;
• Supervise undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students, contributing to their academic and scientific training;
• Foster local and international academic collaborations to maximize the impact and reach of discoveries;
• Implement an innovative, globally recognized research program with the goal of ensuring long-term financial self-sufficiency;
• You will actively contribute to the operation of the Department of Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, and Immunology by participating in various committees and working groups, thereby strengthening institutional life;
• You will actively participate in promoting the discipline through conferences, the publication of scientific works, and the organization of large-scale scientific events.

Qualifications

• Hold a PhD and have completed postdoctoral training in relevant field;
• Demonstrate excellent research productivity through a publication record including articles in top journals in the field, and a history of research funding from recognized organizations, including international ones;
• Demonstrate an interest in and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team, including, for example, translational research;
• Demonstrate the potential to develop internal, national, and international collaborations;
• Demonstrate the ability to provide high-quality university teaching;
• Have adequate proficiency of the French language or be committed to learning it once hired, through the Université de Montréal’s French language support program, in accordance with the Université de Montréal language policy.
