ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED MATHEMATICS
The Department of Applied Mathematics comprises academic staff with active research in analysis of differential equations, numerical analysis and scientific computing, control theory and optimization, operational research, machine learning, probability, and related applications. The Department delivers courses for three four-year undergraduate mathematics programmes and also provides service teaching for other programmes across the University. At the postgraduate level, it offers a Ph.D programme in Mathematical Sciences as well as a master’s programme in Applied Mathematics.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Department of Applied Mathematics at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) invites applications for faculty appointments in Mathematics and AI at any level. Successful candidates will demonstrate the potential to develop an active and independent research programme, as well as a strong commitment to high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We welcome applications from candidates whose research aligns with any area of Artificial Intelligence, including but not limited to
- Mathematical Theories for AI: Algorithmic Optimizations, Interpretability and Transparency, Logics and Analysis, etc.
- Scientific Machine Learning: PDE Numerical Solutions, Dynamical systems, etc.
- Deep/Reinforcement/Deep Reinforcement
- Statistical Analysis and Tuning of Large Language Models
- Operations Research for Computer Vision, Robotics and Intelligent Systems
- Probability and Information Theory for AI Systems
- Computational Theory and Application for AI and Big Data
- AI for Mathematics: Formalization and Auto-Provers
Interdisciplinary research that bridges the mathematics of AI with other domains—such as engineering, natural sciences, industrial applications —is particularly encouraged.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Conduct independent and collaborative research leading to impactful publications and funded projects.
- Teach and design courses in mathematical sciences and its intersections with AI and related areas at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Supervise research projects of Ph.D, Master’s, and undergraduate students.
- Engage in interdisciplinary collaborations within the University and with external partners.
- Contribute to academic service and leadership at the departmental, faculty, and university levels.
- Typical workload balance research:teaching:service is 40:40:20
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
- A Ph.D (or equivalent) in mathematical sciences or a closely related discipline, with strong mathematical background.
- Postdoctoral research experience for junior appointments.
- A distinguished or emerging record of scholarly research and publication in leading international venues.
- Demonstrated ability, or clear potential, to secure competitive external research funding.
- Evidence of, or potential for, excellence in teaching and graduate supervision.
- Fluency in English.
