Job Summary
Florida Gulf Coast University's School of Nursing invites
applications in search of an Assistant Professor. Due to planned
program growth in FGCU's Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) major,
the School of Nursing seeks an experienced and motivated
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to join our
faculty team. This faculty member will hold the rank of Assistant
Professor. This full-time position is a 12-month, on-campus
continuing appointment.
The Doctor Nurse Practice (DNP) curriculum emphasizes innovative
and evidence-based nursing practice to meet the demands of an
increasingly complex health care system, improve the safety and
quality of care delivery, and influence health care policy. DNP
Nurse Practitioner faculty are committed to the education of future
NPs who are competent and well qualified to deliver safe and
high-quality care.
The Assistant Professor, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse
Practitioner (PMHNP) will develop and implement educational courses
including classroom, lab instruction, and clinical practice.
Classroom instruction includes planning for a variety of teaching
and learning strategies directed at meeting individual learning
styles in lecture, online, and hybrid formats. Clinical practice
includes identification, and oversight of, practice preceptors as
well as direct and indirect practicum supervision to designated
students, consistent with the program and course learning
objectives. Advising, supervising, and evaluating PMHNP practicum
students in conjunction with preceptors is required.

Job Description
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
- Teach a full load of theory, laboratory, and clinical courses
each academic year (Fall, Spring and Summer semesters) primarily in
the DNP Program although all faculty may be assigned to teach in
graduate or undergraduate programs as needed.
Engage in research/scholarship as described in Faculty
Performance Evaluation Document (FPED) and College documents.
Plans, prepares, and teaches assigned courses, including
developing syllabi, instructional materials, and assessments.
Delivers consistent, interactive, and engaging lectures aligned
with curriculum goals and accreditation standards.
Maintains the highest standards of classroom instruction and
engages in reflective self-assessment to ensure continuous
improvement.
Holds regular office hours and provides academic advising and
individual support to students.
Utilizes the University's learning management system and other
instructional technologies effectively.
Collaborates with departmental faculty on curriculum
development and program advancement.
Ensures curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are
met.
Establishes and maintains an active research program, including
opportunities for undergraduate student involvement.
Demonstrates evidence of scholarly publication and
grantsmanship.
Engages in continued professional development and maintains
professional skills appropriate to rank and field.
Actively participates in departmental, college, and university
committees and meetings.
Contributes to community, institutional, and professional
service in support of the University's mission.
Participates in faculty evaluation, student learning
assessment, and required training activities.
Communicates professionally and in a timely manner with
students, colleagues, staff, and administrators.
Upholds the highest standards of integrity, responsibility, and
excellence in all professional activities.
Complies with University policies, procedures, and the
Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Performs other duties as assigned.
Additional Job Description
Required Qualifications:
- Earned doctoral degree (PhD, EdD, DNP) in nursing, education,
or health related field from a regionally accredited
institution/program or equivalent accreditation.
- Current national certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health
Nurse Practitioner.
- Current unrestricted APRN licensure or eligibility for APRN
licensure in the state of Florida.
- Current certification in American Heart Association CPR for
Healthcare Provider.
- Clinical practice experience in the practice role of
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Five or more years of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse
Practitioner practice experience.
- Experience teaching in the clinical setting.
- Experience with the development and delivery of on-line
coursework.
- Evidence of scholarship leading to professional presentations,
research, and/or publications.
- Service in professional organizations (e.g., membership and/or
committee involvement).
- Experience working with local mental health providers and
organizations to establish clinical placements and
preceptors.
- Bi- or multi-lingual, with Spanish preferred as one of the
languages.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge of nursing and clinical nursing practice.
- Knowledge of major concepts, assumptions, debates, processes of
inquiry, and ways of knowing that are central to the
discipline(s).
- Understanding how to use digital and interactive technologies
for efficiently and effectively achieving specific learning
goals.
- Knowledge of critical thinking processes and understanding how
to help learners develop high level questioning skills.
- Knowledge and skill in the use of inquiry-based instructional
models and strategies.
- Knowledge of academic and experiential expertise in Psychiatric
Mental Health Nursing with an emphasis on application of engaging
and innovative pedagogy.
- Knowledge and ability to use technology in various teaching
modalities (e.g. Face-to-face, synchronous online or asynchronous
online).
- Ability to efficiently use computer applications and web-based
tools to complete work tasks.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both in writing
and verbally
- Ability to collaborate with stakeholders both within and
outside the University in the development and delivery of
instruction, resulting in improved student learning.
- Ability to contribute to our recruitment, retention, and
support students.
- Ability to participate in strategic planning initiatives within
the School of Nursing and across the institution to build programs
and community partnerships, create new opportunities, and innovate
to transform nursing education.
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective classroom and
clinical instruction in required courses in the area of Psychiatric
Mental Health Nursing.
- Ability to contribute to the development, implementation, and
evaluation of the School of Nursing academic programs.
- Ability to maintaining professional competence and
certification in the PMHNP specialty.
- Proven ability to think strategically and approach challenges
with creativity.
- Demonstrated track record of reliability, meeting goals, and
holding oneself accountable.
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience working effectively
across teams.
