The Department of French, Francophone and Italian Studies at Wellesley College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in French and Francophone Studies beginning July 1, 2027.
Applicants should have native or near-native fluency in French, a commitment to language teaching at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, and demonstrated promise in teaching and scholarship in the field of Francophone Studies.
While the position is open to candidates whose research focuses on the broader Francophone world, we especially invite candidates with particular expertise in sub-Saharan Francophone African literature, film, or culture, of any historical period. We are seeking candidates who can expand our course offerings in Francophone Africa and who have a secondary specialization in one or more of the following areas: disability studies, environmental studies, immigration and diasporic studies, and/or cinema studies. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching diverse undergraduate students in an interdisciplinary, liberal arts context. The teaching load is four courses annually, and faculty are expected to teach two language classes and two upper-level courses in their area of specialization.
We seek applicants who are interested in working in a cooperative and collaborative teaching environment and who are strongly committed to liberal arts education and excellence in scholarship. Candidates who believe they will contribute to that goal are encouraged to apply. Interested applicants should submit applications through our online system at https://www.wellesley.edu/about-us/working-at-wellesley
How to Apply:
Include a cover letter of application indicating teaching and research interests, not to exceed two single-spaced pages; a curriculum vitae; a teaching philosophy statement and two proposed course descriptions (no more than 300 words each); a writing sample (approximately 20 pages) representative of current research; and the names and contact information for three letters of reference, who will be contacted by our online system. These should include at least one letter that speaks to the candidate’s teaching experience.
Applications are due no later than November 1, 2026. Review of applications will begin immediately after and continue until the position is filled. Materials received after that date may not receive a full reading. If circumstances make it impossible to submit any materials electronically, you may email us at working@wellesley.edu for assistance.
The minimum salary for Assistant Professors is $103,000.00 annually.
