Responsibilities
Administrative:
The Assistant Director of Advocacy Programs will work with the Director of Advocacy Programs in administering all aspects of the Advocacy Program, including but not limited to:
- recruiting, training, and supervising adjunct advocacy faculty;
- recruiting, training, and supervising advocacy competition coaches;
- developing advocacy curriculum;
- stewarding the Advocacy Program’s budget;
- supervising all student advocacy organizations;
- coordinating all marketing efforts of the Advocacy Program;
- coordinating advocacy conferences hosted by Cumberland School of Law
- serving as an ambassador at advocacy competitions and conferences;
- leading fundraising initiatives
Teaching:
The Assistant Director will be required to teach Basic Skills in Trial Advocacy and at least one national competition team each semester. The Assistant Director will further be required to teach in the National Trial Team’s summer skills workshops and may be required to teach other advocacy courses. The Assistant Director may teach doctrinal courses as needed by the law school.
Scholarship:
The Assistant Director is not required to produce “units” of scholarship as tenure-track faculty are, though traditional scholarly work is encouraged and supported. The Assistant Director is, however, expected to produce writings of benefit to the Advocacy Program. Qualifying examples include mock casefiles or other materials for use in advocacy education, essays for distribution on advocacy listservs, updates to advocacy publications, and marketing materials.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school. The candidate will also have a minimum of three years of experience in legal advocacy work. The ideal candidate will have excellent leadership, strategic planning, and organizational skills with an ability to lead and manage in a challenging and changing environment. A successful candidate will also have a proven track record of working effectively and collaboratively with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students. Candidates must have prior litigation experience, and candidates with advocacy and mock trial teaching experience are strongly preferred.
