Essential Job Duties:
The Assistant Professor of Population Medicine and Career Success specializes in Large Animal Population Medicine and Veterinary Education Scholarship. This dynamic role is designed for an innovative educator and researcher ready to shape the future of veterinary medicine by blending cutting-edge clinical instruction with ground-breaking educational research. This position plays a central role in delivering our core DVM curriculum while building a nationally recognized research program that drives innovation in farm animal health, AI integration, immersive learning, and student well-being.
Teaching:
Based on specific focus, this faculty member will contribute to population medicine and career readiness teaching in existing core, elective and selective courses. The faculty member will also have the option to participate in teaching and/or proposing new selective, elective or special topics courses. Interested individuals may contribute to ongoing development of house officer and graduate student competency-based training programs and trainee assessments.
Research:
This position is expected to establish an impactful, nationally recognized research program at the intersection of Large Animal Population Medicine and Veterinary Education Scholarship. This dual-focus program will address critical gaps in population health education by actively developing, implementing, and evaluating novel teaching methods. This position will focus on discovery that interrogates, innovates and transforms farm animal population health and career readiness training in veterinary education. The research will address gaps in knowledge and pivotal questions including, but not limited to, the following examples:
Immersive Technologies and Virtual Reality (VR): Investigating the design, implementation, and educational efficacy of immersive virtual environments-such as "digital twin" models of production facilities, processing plants, or pasture ecosystems. This research will leverage VR to simulate complex, high-stakes population medicine scenarios (e.g., biosecurity breaches, foreign animal disease outbreaks, and large-scale herd epidemiology mapping). The focus will be on assessing how immersive environments support rapid systemic decision-making, epidemiological risk assessment, and spatial problem-solving without inducing real-world biosecurity or animal welfare risks.
Competency-Based Veterinary Education (CBVE) & Advanced Assessments: Developing and validating robust, outcomes-based assessment methodologies. This includes creating standard-setting tools that reliably evaluate both technical execution (e.g., simulation-based herd analytics or theriogenology models) and non-technical professional competencies (e.g., communication, animal welfare advocacy, and One Health system collaboration).
Experiential, Simulation, and Community-Engaged Learning: Evaluating the educational efficacy and scalable impact of ambulatory training and community-partnered outreach to bridge the gap between tertiary referral environments and general production practice. Comparing student learning outcomes relevant to population medicine in different clinical settings.
Professional Identity Formation (PIF) and Career Sustainability: Investigating the longitudinal development of professional identity in DVM students and its explicit correlation to post-graduation career satisfaction, practitioner retention, and mental well-being. This research will evaluate how educational interventions, mentorship, and hidden curricula influence the psychological transition from student to clinician. Specifically, it will look at how to cultivate a resilient, "challenge-focused" professional identity within large animal and population medicine-equipping graduates to find career satisfaction while navigating the unique systemic, environmental, and socio-economic pressures intrinsic to production animal practice.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Literacy: Investigating the integration of generative AI, intelligent tutoring systems, and clinical decision support models into the DVM curriculum. Research will evaluate how to foster AI literacy and "appropriate skepticism" while examining the cognitive risks of overreliance, algorithmic bias, and data privacy in production animal surveillance.
This individual will join existing large and farm animal faculty and staff currently teaching population medicine and epidemiology in DVM years 1-4.

- DVM (or equivalent degree)
Required Qualifications:
- Excellent communication skills.
- Experience with extramurally funded research programs.
- A record of collegial and productive interactions with faculty, staff and students.
- Interest and enthusiasm for training and mentorship, particularly with regard to graduate students, house officers, and/or postdoctoral fellows.
- Comfort and experience working with highly interdisciplinary and collaborative faculty.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Evidence of relevant advanced training, i.e. DACVIM, DACVPM, EdD, PhD, Masters, (or equivalent degree), and/or teaching certification.
