About the Position

The Department of Dramatic Arts invites applicants for a one-year Instructional Limited Term Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2026. To fulfill the 80% teaching, 20% service expectations of the position, the successful candidate will teach a range of courses in scenography and technical production; contribute to scenography, technical production, and/or producing for DART’s season; and contribute to curriculum development. Courses will include DART 1F40: Scenography and Stagecraft and at least one of DART 2P61: Design for Theatre – Scenographic Environment or DART 2P62: Design for Theatre - Embodied Scenographies.

Qualifications

The Department of Dramatic Arts is seeking candidates with expertise in mediated, spatial, and/or embodied scenographies and related technical skills, with experience in postsecondary teaching. Candidates will hold a relevant PhD, MDes, MFA, or equivalent professional experience, and will demonstrate significant professional contributions to design for theatre. Specific scenographic expertise may include: extended, mixed, and/or virtual reality scenographies; lighting, projection, sound, animated and/or intermedial scenographies; set and/or properties design and decoration; site-specific, land-based, and/or other spatial scenographies; costume, hair, makeup, and/or performance prosthetics design; puppetry design. In addition to creative and technical excellence in performance scenographies and techniques, candidates will provide evidence of successful, theoretically-informed teaching and/or mentorship in postsecondary theatre education. Demonstrated expertise in anti-supremacist approaches to teaching theatre, theatre creation and/or professional mentorship is essential. Experience in arts administration, producing, professional associations, academic service, and/or course and curriculum design is preferred.

Candidates must submit:

  • A letter of application.
  • A portfolio demonstrating creative and technical excellence in scenography.
  • A teaching dossier providing objective, systematically-collected evidence of successful high quality teaching or professional mentorship, and evidence of expertise in anti-supremacist approaches to theatre making, theatre pedagogy, and/or professional mentorship. Dossiers will ideally demonstrate how pedagogical principles are integrated into the applicant’s post-secondary teaching and/or mentorship.
  • A curriculum vitae, including the names and contact information for three references.

Evidence of professional impact and references from professional peers will be considered evidence of professional experience equivalent to a terminal degree.

The target hiring range for this position is $95,000 to $110,000. The final salary will be determined based on relevant experience, internal equity and budget considerations.

This ad is for an existing position in the Brock University Faculty Association (BUFA) bargaining unit. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.
