Assistant Professor - Otolaryngologist - Head & Neck Surgeon
The Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC) and Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) and the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto are recruiting a fellowship-trained Head & Neck Surgical Oncologist and Reconstructive Surgeon to join a team of similarly trained physicians. The successful candidate will have an academic position description of Clinician-Investigator and must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2026 or as mutually agreed upon.
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is an affiliated teaching hospital of the University of Toronto and a national leader in complex care. Major clinical programs include Oncology through the Odette Cancer Centre, Trauma (home to Canada’s first and largest trauma centre), Craniofacial Prosthetic Unit and the Integrated Surgical Program. The Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery Department plays a central role in supporting these programs, and works in close collaboration with Radiation and Medical Oncology, Endocrinology as well as Plastic Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopedic (Spine) and Trauma Surgeons.Michael Garron Hospital is an affiliated teaching hospital of the University of Toronto which is a Cancer Care Ontario Level 1 Thoracic Centre and with which a regional partnership exists with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the Odette Cancer Centre. Endocrine, Skin (including melanoma with sentinel lymph node biopsy), Diagnostic Procedures and Salivary Gland surgery is performed at Michael Garron Hospital through this regional partnership with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the Odette Cancer Centre.
This dual position benefits from involvement at both the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Michael Garron Hospital sites with full affiliation at both. Applicants must hold an MD or equivalent, be Board-certified or Board-eligible in Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or an equivalent international qualification, and have completed one year of fellowship training in Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery including Free Flap Reconstructive surgery and Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) through the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) or equivalent. They must be eligible for medical licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The team-based oncologic practice at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the Odette Cancer Centre will afford the candidate involvement in at least one day per month of TORS and equitable access to ablative/free flap reconstructive cases, based on their interests and expertise. All flap cases are performed in a two-team approach to reduce surgical time and increase collaboration and surgical growth. Cases are shared equitably through a single-entry model consultation system at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the Odette Cancer Centre.
This position is a hybrid clinical and academic appointment. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to academics, with evidence of teaching excellence and scholarly productivity. Advanced research training, ideally an MSc or equivalent, is preferred; however, candidates with a robust and sustained research portfolio will also be considered. Candidates without a Master’s degree must demonstrate a strong commitment and a clear plan to successfully obtain a relevant Master’s Degree in an area of interest to them, within the first three years of starting their independent practice.
Academic rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Compensation is from a mixed model including a mix of fee-for-service and alternating funding plan support. The estimated income range is $350,000 - 500,000 per annum for a full-time equivalent with opportunity for increased salary commensurate with experience and academic credentials.
