The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at The University of Maryland School of Public Health, College Park (http://www.sph.umd.edu/EPIB) is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in biostatistics.

We seek candidates with an outstanding research record in biostatistics who creatively integrate artificial intelligence/machine learning to address critical challenges in public health. The successful candidate will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary community committed to advancing methodological innovation in biostatistics and improving population health.

The Department’s mission is to improve health and reduce health disparities in local communities, the state of Maryland, and the nation. This is accomplished by using established epidemiological and quantitative methods, as well as developing new scientifically grounded approaches, that are applied predominantly to identifying determinants of health and discovering and evaluating primary and secondary prevention strategies for chronic diseases. The Department offers an MPH, MS, and PhD degrees in biostatistics, as well as an MPH and PhD degrees in epidemiology. The position represents a unique opportunity to join this diverse and thriving department and contribute to an exciting research agenda and graduate student training program.

The School of Public Health is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health and is located on the flagship College Park campus of the University of Maryland. The School’s vision is “to be a leader in the discovery, application and dissemination of public health knowledge in the State of Maryland, the nation and the world.” The successful candidate will contribute to fulfilling this vision.

A wide range of collaborative opportunities exists at the University with nearby federal, state and local government agencies, non-profit organizations, and other academic institutions. Collaborative efforts have been made to bring together statisticians from both College Park and Baltimore campuses of the University of Maryland. Our faculty members actively interact with other departments in the School of Public Health, the Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Institute at Maryland (AIM), the Institute for Health Computing (UM-IHC), the Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM), the Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computation (AMSC) Program, the Maryland Population Research Center (MPRC), the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (CBCB), University of Maryland School of Medicine at Baltimore, as well as with researchers in other applied fields. The position represents a unique opportunity to join a growing department and contribute to an exciting research agenda and graduate student training program.

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates should possess a doctoral degree in biostatistics or statistics with a strong track record in application of artificial intelligence and data science in addressing emerging public health threats (climate change, emerging infectious disease, pandemic preparedness, mental health crisis, NCDs), and have a track record of scholarly achievement in the stated field that supports a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank. Candidates with expertise in working with large datasets (EHR, surveys, healthcare utilization, satellite observations, social media data) using time-series and time-to-event methods are welcome to apply. Applicants are expected to develop an independent research program that complements ongoing research activities within the department utilizing state of the art biostatistical methodologies. Candidates with expertise in machine learning and health data analytics are particularly encouraged to apply. The ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in the department, the school, and the University is highly desirable. Qualified candidates will have demonstrated the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate level biostatistics courses, mentor graduate students, and collaborate on research projects. RESPONSIBILITIES

Successful candidates are expected to develop a nationally recognized research program, engage in extramurally-funded multidisciplinary research, teach biostatistics courses to undergraduate and graduate students at both fundamental and advanced levels, mentor graduate students, and engage in university and professional service. Effective interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills are essential.

SALARY and APPOINTMENT DATE

This is a 9-month tenure-track appointment; salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Funding is guaranteed for 9 months annually, with the potential to extend salary support to 12 months with external funds. Appointments may begin January 2027 or a mutually agreed-upon date.
