The TalTech Department of Software Science invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The purpose of the position is to conduct high-level research and teaching in the fields of privacy-preserving and distributed machine learning technologies and related fields of artificial intelligence and computer science. The candidate is expected to supervise undergraduate and master's students in their field and to collaborate within the department, school, and university.
Main responsibilities:
- Research and development activities in the field including administration of the activities, as well as management of research and development projects;
- Developing cooperation with other research and development institutions, the public sector, and companies;
- Organizing the development of facilities and equipment necessary for research and development activities in the field;
- Balanced teaching, research, and development activities in the field in accordance with the Regulation on Academic Career Management;
- Supervising doctoral, master's, and bachelor's students in conducting independent research;
- Publishing research and development results; working as an expert in the field;
- Delivering teaching (at bachelor's, focused master's, and doctoral levels) and contributing to teaching and learning development in the field using modern methodological and educational technology approaches;
- Organizing academic teaching and curriculum development and being responsible for its quality in the field;
- Expected research and development directions: privacy-preserving and distributed machine learning technologies, including health and remote sensing applications; implementation of statistical machine learning and artificial intelligence methods in collaboration with other university units and private and public sector partners. Activities include basic and applied research, development of prototypes and proof-of-concept solutions at various technology readiness levels (TRL), as well as participation and management in consortium projects with both research and industrial partners.
Additional tasks: participation in national and international professional decision-making bodies and committees; contribution to scientific journal editorial boards, reviewing scientific articles; popularizing one's field and research area; coordination of professional continuing education.
The Assistant Professor position is fixed-term, up to eight years from the start date. The workload is 1.0 and the position will be filled by 01.01.2027.
The position is located in the Machine Learning Research Group. The Machine Learning Research Group is working on supporting assessment-based diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, cognitive abnormalities, and fatigue.

Specific Requirements
Required:
- Doctoral degree in a research area related to the field; no more than 10 years* have passed since the defense of the doctoral degree as of the expected start date;
- Research experience at a foreign university or research institution in the field of privacy-preserving and distributed machine learning technologies;
- Previous successful experience in obtaining project funding and managing and implementing projects;
- Has published scientific publications equivalent to two doctoral theses and referability is characterized by a technical sciences h-index ≥ 6;
- Participation in scientific or other organizational events or professional activity in social media;
- Participation in activities of professional or scientific organizations and networks, participation in internal working groups, and serving on defense committees at other universities, participation in international conference committees;
- Previous university teaching experience and teaching experience at a foreign university are desirable.
* If the candidate has been on parental leave, maternity or paternity leave, or in military or substitute service after obtaining the doctoral degree, the time limit for becoming an assistant professor is extended by the corresponding period.
Language skills: advanced level of English. Estonian language skills are an advantage in order to teach at the bachelor's level (by the end of the first attestation period, Estonian language skills must be at least level B1).
