Assistant Radiation Safety Officer
Job Summary
Assistant Radiation Safety Officer Provides support to radioactive material and x-ray safety programs to promote safe and compliant use of radiation producing devices and radioactive material. Performs radiation detection equipment and calibration. Identifies and investigates radiation hazards. Provides technical support, calculations, and data analysis to validate the effectiveness of radiation/contamination surveillance and personnel dosimetry programs. Maintains the Health Physics Assistant (HPA) relational database; analyzes data; establishes appropriate program metrics; and produces monthly and quarterly summary and trend reports. Prepares data for analysis by the Radiation Safety Officer and the institution Radiation Safety Committee. Provides radiation safety training and conducts in-field surveillance of radiation use areas. Conducts training for radiation safety staff and radiation workers. Responsible for drafting and updating internal radiation safety procedures.
Responsibilities
Research Laboratory Program
- Direct technicians who conduct monthly surveys, investigations, and assessments of radioactive material use laboratories, to ensure compliance with state and federal radioactive material regulations and standards of accrediting organizations.
- Conduct quarterly sealed source inventory and leak tests.
- Calibrate radiation detection instruments in accordance with federal and state requirements.
- Establish new radioactive material use laboratories and process lab closures.
- Maintain database and Excel spreadsheets to capture and analyze results.
- Interact with State/Federal regulators.
- Calculate the annual dose of employees as well as dose to pregnant workers for radioactive material exposure.
- Complete annual audits as required by regulations.
Radiation Producing Device Program
- Establish new x-ray use areas and process equipment clearance.
- Oversee the annual certification of diagnostic x-ray systems for compliance with state regulations.
- Direct technicians who conduct quarterly surveys for compliance.
- Design radiation shielding for radiation producing devices.
Training Program
- Train technicians on technical aspects of radiation safety.
- Develop and present annual radiation safety training for research personnel.
Radioactive Waste Program
- Ensure proper storage of radiological waste at the point of origin.
- Oversee the Occupational Health and Safety Technicians as they collect, package, transport, and store of radiological waste to the Material Safety Storage Facility.
- Coordinate disposal with authorized vendor of radiological waste in accordance with State and Federal Regulations.
Policy and Procedures
- Author or revise internal radiation safety procedures for accomplishing radiation/contamination surveillances, radioactive waste disposal, in compliance with State and Federal regulation.
- Review procedures on annual basis for compliance with updated regulations.
Emergency/Incident Response
- Respond to spills of radioactive material.
- Coordinate assistance from Public Safety, if necessary to control the scene.
- Contain spill.
- Assist affected employees, to include personnel decontamination.
- Direct staff on spill clean-up, or in the case of substantial or particularly hazardous material, perform the clean-up.
- Properly dispose of contaminated materials.
- Document actions for follow-up and review by regulatory agencies.
Laser Safety
- Serve as the institutions Laser Safety Officer.
- Support and coordinate the Laser Safety Committee.
- Conduct laser safety inspections and provide recommendations for enhancing laser safety.
- Maintain the Laser Safety Guide.
Radiation Safety Committee
- Support the Radiation Safety Officer in coordinating the activities of the Radiation Safety Committee to include minutes, reports and audits.
Other
Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
