General Information:
James Madison University, a Division I Member of the NCAA and Sun Belt Conference, is seeking a Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach. This position is full-time and will operate in a split capacity between JMU ROTC and JMU Athletics. This position would work with a JMU Olympic Sport Program as well as the Army and Air Force ROTC cadets and would assist the departments with cross-coverage as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Development and Implementation:
- Communication with coaching staffs and direct supervisors to ensure that training is sport-specific for assigned athletic teams.
- Performance evaluations for formal feedback.
- Design, implement, and oversee periodized strength, conditioning, and mobility programs aligned with Army ROTC physical readiness requirements.
- Prepare cadets for Army Physical Fitness Test (AFT) and Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) standards and other military-specific physical demands (ruck marching, load carriage, tactical fitness, and endurance).
- Conduct baseline, mid-cycle, and post-program assessments to evaluate strength, power, endurance, mobility, and injury risk.
- Modify training plans based on cadet performance data, training phases, and seasonal ROTC requirements.
Coaching, teaching, and instructing proper weightlifting, speed, agility, and conditioning techniques:
- Communication with support staff members regarding fitness levels for specific assigned teams.
- Communication and education with student-athletes to ensure that they understand expectations of the weight room for safety purposes, warm-up and cooldown protocols, and recovery techniques.
- Performance meetings with Integrated Health and Sports Performance teams to ensure care is being designed properly for student-athletes from a physical and mental standpoint. Will attend department meetings (S&C and IH&SP) to continually align standards of all support staff members.
- Work with over 300 Army and Air Force cadets on development of strength and conditioning programming.
- Lead and supervise individual and group training sessions in strength, conditioning, speed, agility, and endurance.
- Modify exercises for injured student-athletes and cadets.
- Athletics Specific Duties and Army and Air Force ROTC Specific Duties as assigned
Facility and Equipment Management:
- Ensure Memorial and Convocation Center training facilities are safe, clean, and organized at all times.
- Oversee proper use, setup, and breakdown of training equipment.
- Identify equipment needs and communicate maintenance or replacement concerns to appropriate staff.
Professionalism, Initiative, and Collaboration:
- Take initiative to continuously improve the ROTC physical training program and JMU Athletics training program.
- Build positive working relationships with cadets, cadre, athletics staff, and university staff.
- Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and reliability consistent with university, Army and Air Force ROTC, and athletics standards.
- Maintain appropriate certifications and stay current with best practices in strength and conditioning.
Supervise and mentor student assistants (practicum, internship and volunteer students) and graduate assistant coaches:
- Work with the kinesiology program at JMU and other S&C coaches on recruitment, training, education (safety and weightlifting principles) for all students/ volunteers, etc.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Must have appropriate certifications (CSCCA/ SCCC or NSCA/ CSCS) and CPR/ AED certification
- Bachelor's or Master's degree, preferably in health-related field (kinesiology, health behavior sciences, etc.)
- Ability to effectively communicate with multiple parties within the Athletic Department and Department of Military Science
- Previous experience working with tactical and collegiate athletic populations
- Demonstrated commitment to advanced continuing education
