ASSOCIATE ACQUISITIONS EDITOR, MIT Press, is responsible for acquiring, developing, and managing a pipeline of projects across six series, working closely with series editors, authors, and peer reviewers to produce high-quality manuscripts for diverse audiences; overseeing an active backlist; serving as a primary contact for authors while building relationships with MIT faculty and broader academic networks; supporting a Senior Acquisitions Editor; managing approximately 20 projects annually within the MIT Press’s art, architecture, and design programs, including highly illustrated books; tracking projects at various stages; coordinating peer review; assisting with fundraising and payments; guiding works through the publishing process; and handling communications with internal and external stakeholders. This role offers an opportunity to develop expertise in book acquisitions at a major university press while engaging with global authors and evolving fields such as art, design, visual culture, and critical theory. It also provides exposure to subjects like humanities, media studies, and science and technology.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in a related field; a minimum of one year of publishing experience; excellent organizational and communication skills; strong administrative computer skills (MS Word, FileMaker, Excel, PowerPoint, Biblio); ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks and effectively manage time; ability to deal with confidential information and/or issues (including peer reviewer identities, tax forms, etc.) using discretion and judgment; and detail-oriented, self-motivated, and enjoy working in teams when necessary. PREFERRED: Experience with copyright permissions and highly illustrated book production. Subject expertise is beneficial but not required, and candidates with fresh perspectives are encouraged to apply.
