Organizational Unit Overview:
The Medical Services unit of the Department of Athletics oversees and coordinates the health and well-being of all of the student-athletes at East Carolina University.
Job Duties:
Reporting to the Assistant Athletics Director for Medical Services, the Associate Athletic Trainer will:
- Assist the Assistant Athletics Director for Medical Services, team physician, and associated medical practitioners in prevention, immediate care, and rehabilitation of injuries sustained by East Carolina University student-athletes
- Carry out policies and procedures of the athletic training facilities and ECU Department of Athletics
- Assist the Head Football Athletic Trainer and additional football staff in providing medical coverage to a group of up to 125 Division 1 Football Student Athletes.
- Serve as backup to the Head Football Athletic Trainer when needed. Communicate with the football staff during staff meetings and give injury updates when the Head Athletic Trainer is not available.
- Serve as the Athletic Training liaison with the Director of Athletic Equipment Operations regarding the safety and purchasing of athletic equipment.
- Manage all ECU athletic training emergency policies. Update, review and educate the staff on these policies according to NCAA guidelines.
- Responsible for submitting athletic training injury data to the NCAA through ATS computer-based software.
- Responsible for educating the Athletic Training Staff on heat illness and coordinating yearly in service with Greenville EMS.
- Responsible for coordinating with ECU Athletics Health Care Administrator for updating NCAA guidelines.
- Responsible for managing ECU athletics weather surveillance system (Weather DTN).
- Maintain Hydrotherapy Pools, check chemicals and consult with Swim Ex when needed for repairs.
- Direct and provide athletic training coverage and supervision of intercollegiate athletic teams during practices, games, and strength and conditioning sessions as assigned
- Coordinate physical exams and pre-participation paperwork for student-athletes through the team physician or designee, and managers referral appointment scheduling.
- Perform selected portions of the physical exam under the direction and supervision of the team physician to include responsibility for imaging.
- Apply specific and appropriate taping, bracing, and other protective/supportive devices in order to prevent injury or re-injury
- Monitor environmental conditions of playing and practice areas in order to make recommendations regarding the safety of the student-athlete, following accepted and recommended guidelines. Responsibility for submission of work orders for required maintenance.
- Refer the student-athlete to medical personnel (i.e. physicians, physical therapists, nutritionists, and other allied health professionals) in order to ensure appropriate medical evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation by implementing standard verbal and/or written orders
- Maintain appropriate medical records and perform injury tracking.
- Be familiar with emergency action plans for each athletic venue
- Familiarize student-athletes with the ECU Athletic Departments Drug Testing and Counseling program
- Provide education and counseling in health-related matters to the student-athletes and coaches
- Direct the student-athletes and coaches to professionals in order that the student-athlete may receive consultation for social and/or personal programs on specific topics, and by personal consultation
- Assist in CPR/First Aid/AED instruction to coaches, athletic department staff, and athletic training students and staff
- Provide clinical supervision of athletic training students/student-aid workers to include staffing, supervision, and scheduling of the Student Program.
- Manage responsibility for transportation of Student Athletes to off campus appointments
- Adhere to regulations of the North Carolina Athletic Trainer Practice Act
- Perform administrative duties as assigned by the Assistant Athletics Director for Medical Services
- Build quality relationships and work collaboratively and professionally with Pirate Club, athletics, and University staff, students, business vendors and all donors and stakeholders.
- Abide by all written policies and procedures of ECU, the Department of Athletics, The Educational Foundation (Pirate Club), the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and all applicable conferences or associations.
- Direct and provide athletic training coverage and supervision of intercollegiate athletic teams during practices, games, and strength and conditioning sessions as assigned
- Nights, weekends, holidays, extended hours, and travel are required in the performance of duties.
Minimum Education/Experience:
Bachelors degree in Athletic Training or related field is required from an appropriately accredited institution.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
Certified Athletic Trainer as designated by the Board of Certification.
Licensed Athletic Trainer by the North Carolina Board of Athletic Training Examiners or eligible.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Masters Degree from an accredited institution in Athletic Training or related field preferred
Football experience preferred
