Associate Director of Development, Penn Medicine
Job Description Summary
The Associate Director of Development for the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is responsible for gaining a deep understanding of the educational, research, clinical, and philanthropic needs of the Perelman School of Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania Health System, and the broader University of Pennsylvania.
The Associate Director of Development will lead strategic portfolio development for assigned regions including identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding prospects, as well as engaging potential and current volunteer leaders.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the educational, research, clinical, and philanthropic needs, and goals of the Perelman School of Medicine.
- Become familiar with the educational, research, clinical, and philanthropic needs, and goals for specific areas within the University of Pennsylvania Health System and the University of Pennsylvania.
- Perform moves management and lead portfolio development.
- Identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual major, principal, and planned giving prospects within assigned regions.
- Identifying and cultivating potential volunteer leaders for the Medical Alumni Advisory Council and other councils within Penn Medicine and at the University.
- Partnering with specific clinical departments and divisions, serving as a resource on identifying potential graduate medical education alumni donors.
- Partner with Penn Medicine Development Communications on major prospect proposals and cultivation/solicitation informational materials for potential prospects and current donors.
- Partner and serve as a resource to the Perelman School of Medicine Alumni Relations team on the identification of regional donor and volunteer events as well as the planning, and coordinating of special events, including Medical Alumni Weekend, for prospects and donors.
- Partner and serve as a resource to the Perelman School of Medicine Annual Giving team on identifying donors in reunion as well as potential donors for annual giving campaigns.
- Collaborate with University of Pennsylvania and Penn Medicine senior leadership and development colleagues on prospects and donors.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and 3 to 5 years of progressively responsible experience in institutional development (or related field) or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Knowledge or experience in planned giving is desired.
- Ability to function independently yet work in a centralized development structure.
- Demonstrated ability to meet fundraising goals with growing confidence in managing and balancing prospective and current donor and volunteer relationships.
- Ability to be at ease with faculty, academic and administrative leaders, and community leaders, gaining their confidence and respect.
- Strong administrative experience, project management style, and ability to establish objectives, set performance standards, and organize a successful approach to achieving fundraising goals.
- Ability to work well and collaboratively with staff members. Demonstrate high integrity and trust.
- Ability to take information from many sources and distill it to core messages that are communicated strategically and effectively to different audiences.
- Excellent computer and writing/communication skills essential. Familiarity with Salesforce and Microsoft Outlook is preferred.
- Ability to travel both locally and nationally and work occasional evenings and weekends. A valid driver's license is required.
