Description:

The Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in either the non-tenure clinician educator track or the tenure track. Applicants must have an M.D., or Ph.D, or JD, or equivalent degree. Candidates whose scholarly activities are in any area related to bioethics are invited to apply.

Teaching responsibilities may include teaching courses in the department’s thriving Master of Bioethics program and mentoring post-doctoral fellows.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include pursuing a program of investigator-initiated original empirical and/or conceptual research, including peer-reviewed external funding and publication in leading bioethics, general medical or science, or other relevant journals.

Administrative responsibilities include shaping and overseeing the division’s research and educational portfolios, recruiting new faculty, mentoring existing faculty, and building relationships related to bioethics across the University of Pennsylvania and its health system.

The successful candidate will lead the Medical Ethics Division within the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy. The Division includes 11 appointed faculty, in addition to numerous affiliated faculty, who conduct research related to clinical ethics, research ethics, allocation of scarce health-related resources, aging and dementia, conflict of interest, neuroethics, health disparities and equity, patient and public engagement in policymaking, ethical issues in genomics, mental health ethics, regulation of medical technologies, and more. It has an annual extramural research budget of approximately of $3 Million. In addition, the Division is home to a thriving Master of Bioethics program that graduates approximately 40 students each year. The successful applicant for this position will:1.    Have a national reputation as a leading scholar in one or more areas of bioethics.    2.   Demonstrate the ability and vision to lead a complex academic division, including managing trainees, faculty, and staff3.    Have a track record of competing for peer-reviewed extramural funding and of impactful publication4.    Have a history of excellence as a teacher of bioethics and as a mentor We are profoundly committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and seek candidates who share this commitment.
