Associate or Full Professor (Clinical) and Division Director, Harvey E. Beardmore Division of General Surgery, Department of Pediatric Surgery
Position Description
The McGill University Department of Pediatric Surgery, Harvey E. Beardmore Division of Pediatric Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position based at the Montreal Children’s Hospital of the McGill University Health to act as the Director of the Harvey E. Beardmore Division of General Surgery at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a three-year, renewable appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure.
The Department of Pediatric Surgery is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs and research across our teaching hospitals. The Montreal Children’s Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH).
The Harvey E. Beardmore Division is a leader in outcomes research, global surgery, surgical education, enhanced recovery after surgery programs, and patient and family-centered pediatric surgical care with activities around the globe. The Division also runs a number of multidisciplinary centres in the fields of chest wall anomalies, diaphragmatic hernia, esophageal atresia, colorectal disorders, and pediatric obesity. It hosts Canada’s first pediatric surgery fellowship program and implements a very broad educational spectrum that spans high school students to physicians in practice. It hosts the Commisur Lab, a pioneering research group in surgical communication and global surgery that attracts students from around the world.
Job Duties
The successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Pediatric Surgery where they will be expected to participate in the full spectrum of educational activities. The incumbent will have the opportunity to engage in a busy tertiary academic and clinical practice, as such, they will be expected to be familiar with the surgical management of all aspects of pediatric surgery.
As Division Director, the successful candidate, if eligible by seniority or expertise, may apply separately for one of the open Endowed Chairs available in the Department of Pediatric Surgery. The successful candidate will be a transformational leader who, as Director of the Harvey E. Beardmore Division of General Surgery, will draw on strong interpersonal skills to inspire best practices and innovation, manage a complex set of clinical services and diverse/high quality training programs. The incumbent will also be expected to bring a track-record of success in academic leadership with the ability to foster excellence in teaching, patient care, and research within the Division. The successful candidate will provide leadership for the clinical and educational missions of the Division and Department, promote independent and collaborative research and fulfill administrative responsibilities at the institutional, university, regional and provincial levels, where appropriate.
The incumbent will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements
Candidates must:
- Hold an MD degree (or equivalent), and be eligible for, licensure in the Province of Quebec;
- Have fellowship training in Pediatric General Surgery;
- Hold certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
- Demonstrate a commitment to high-quality teaching and inclusive pedagogy;
- Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
Assets:
- A national or international career path in pediatric surgery;
- Relevant administrative experience or an advanced administrative degree;
- A proficient career in Pediatric Surgery, prior administrative experience and demonstrated leadership at the national/international level and/or an advanced administrative degree.
