About the Opportunity

The School of Engineering is seeking an academic in Civil Engineering to lead the development of a distinctive teaching and research culture focused on climate adaptation and mitigation.

The position is responsible for embedding climate-safe approaches such as risk-informed infrastructure design, bushfire and flood resilience, and the use of low-carbon construction materials and methods into curriculum and applied research.

Combining technical excellence with strong social awareness, this role delivers impactful, Climate Safe engineering outcomes at scale. You’ll lead and produce high-quality, internationally recognised research, secure competitive external funding, and publish in leading outlets whilst consistently meeting and exceeding Level D research expectations. You’ll also successfully supervise higher degree research students through to completion, building the next generation of experts.

Equally, you’ll deliver exceptional teaching across undergraduate; and where relevant, postgraduate programs, setting a benchmark for quality and driving innovation in learning and teaching within the discipline. Beyond the classroom, you’ll provide strategic leadership for building and sustaining strong partnerships across the University and with local, national, and international stakeholders spanning academia, industry, and the broader community. You’ll lead initiatives in both teaching and research that create meaningful, measurable Climate Safe outcomes.

What’s Required (Role Specific Skills, Knowledge and Experience)

We are seeking a highly accomplished academic with an internationally recognised research profile and a strong track record of innovation and sustained contribution in Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Water Resources Engineering. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in research through high-quality publications, competitive funding success, and supervision of research higher degree students to completion. They will bring extensive university-level teaching experience, proven academic leadership, and a strong ability to build collaborative, high-performing teams and partnerships across academia, industry, and the wider community. Experience in industry, along with an understanding of the commercial and financial dimensions of engineering and the application of research in practice, will be highly valued.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level D, with a base salary in the range of $166,014 to $180,018 per annum. The total remuneration package, including up to 17% superannuation, will be up to $210,621 per annum.
