The expected start date is August 2026.
We seek candidates who have a strong desire to contribute to a growing School of Social Work at one of the nation’s largest Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The PhD/ DSW department offers the traditional research PhD and the practice-based DSW degrees. The PhD program was established in 2006 and the DSW program was started in 2023. The mission of Morgan’s School of Social Work is to prepare practitioners and leaders, policy experts, knowledge producers, scholars, and social work educators who are committed to solving problems and improving the quality of life for urban individuals, families, and communities. Special focus is on urban individuals, families, and communities of color within a racial, social, and economic justice framework. The School of Social Work also has a Center on Urban Violence and Crime Reduction. The Center’s purpose is consistent with the School’s urban mission, and it seeks to examine the incidents of crime and violence within urban communities from a critical, oppression-centered perspective.
Founded in 1867, and located in Baltimore, Maryland, Morgan State University is designated by the state as Maryland’s Pre-eminent Public Urban Research University and currently has an R2 Carnegie classification. The university’s recently adopted strategic plan places emphasis on Morgan’s ascendency to an R1 research university. Morgan’s mission is to serve a multiethnic and multiracial student body and to help ensure that the benefits of higher education are enjoyed by a broad segment of the population. To achieve this mission, the university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate academic programs, including 24 doctoral programs, and currently has the third largest enrollment among HBCUs in the nation.
