Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position
The
Graduate Director of Criminal Justice will oversee
graduate programs (Master’s / PhD), manage curriculum, advise
students, handle admissions, ensure program quality, and serve as a
key link between graduate faculty, students, and the department
with both the graduate college and the university. The new hire
will focus on theory, research, and professional development,
distinct from undergraduate roles, guiding future researchers,
policymakers, and leaders in the justice system. This person
reports to the Chairperson of the Criminal Justice Department and
will work closely with the College and University administration,
as well as graduate faculty. The person will provide strong
foundational support for the new graduate programs and lead the
incorporation of innovative learning approaches for students
specializing in criminal justice and investigative science.
The new hire will teach an approved curriculum of graduate-level
courses, support graduate students in maintaining satisfactory
academic progress, serve on thesis and dissertation committees, and
pursue external funding opportunities. Additional responsibilities
include participating in retention initiatives; advising and
mentoring students; and serving on the University’s Graduate
Council. Other duties include course review and related teaching
tasks as assigned.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Criminal Justice is housed within the College of
Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. It offers a Bachelor of
Science degree in Criminal Justice and Criminal Justice with a
Certificate in Crime Scene Investigation, a Master of Science and a
Ph.D. with four areas of specialization, Digital Forensics,
Investigative Science, Social Justice, and Research Methods. The
Department has over 550 majors.
The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences houses the
Departments of Criminal Justice, English, History and Political
Science, Journalism and Mass Communication, Liberal Studies, and
Visual and Performing Arts. CAHSS is an academic unit that reports
to the Office of the Provost/Division of Academic Affairs and
enrolls more than 2,000 students and has more than 160 full-time
faculty members.
N.C. A&T is a public, land-grant, doctoral research institution
and has been the largest historically Black university in the
country for the past decade. With an enrollment of 15,275 students
in Fall 2026, the university offers 59 undergraduate degree
programs, 36 master’s programs, and 12 doctoral programs. It is
America’s top producer of Black graduates in Engineering and
Agricultural Science bachelor’s programs, as well as a top five
producer in numerous additional disciplines, including Liberal Arts
and Communications/Journalism. It also ranks No. 3 in master’s
degrees awarded to Black graduates in Engineering Technologies and
Related Fields, no. 4 in master’s degrees in Engineering, and no.
11 best business school for women in the nation.
Nationally recognized for its leadership and excellence in STEM

Research Activity” in the Carnegie Classifications and is poised to
achieve “R1-Very High Research Activity” status. It also holds
Carnegie’s earned credential in Community Engagement and the
Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities ( APLU )
Innovation and Economic Prosperity designation. With an annual
economic impact of $2.4 billion, N.C. A&T plays a vital role as

Minimum Requirements
Ph.D. or other terminal degree in the discipline with at least four
years teaching experience, and scholarly activity and service,
preferably in a higher education setting.
Minimum Requirements:
- Academic Oversight: Developing and maintaining graduate
curriculum and standards.
Student Support: Advising Master’s/PhD students, guiding theses
/dissertations.
Admissions: Managing the recruitment and selection of graduate
candidates.
Faculty Liaison: Working with professors teaching graduate
courses.
Program Representation: Acting as the primary contact for
graduate studies in the department.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training,
Education
At least four years of teaching at the university level. In
addition to the stated minimum degree/qualifications, demonstrated
excellence in teaching and scholarly/research activities consistent
with eligibility for appointment/tenure at the rank of associate
professor or professor is preferred.
