Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position
The Department of Visual & Performing Arts chairperson will report to the dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and will have responsibility for the leadership and administration of the department. More specific administrative duties of this position include but are not limited to:
- Engaging faculty in the strategic planning process for the department
- Department budget development, management and allocation
- Personnel management (i.e., recruitment and hiring; faculty/staff assignments and workload distribution; evaluation and professional guidance/development; reappointment, promotion & tenure, and post-tenure processes
The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences ( CAHSS ) has more than 2,000 students and 200 faculty and staff and is comprised of six departments, including Criminal Justice, English, History & Political Science, Journalism & Mass Communication, Liberal Studies, and Visual & Performing Arts. CAHSS develops programming based upon and consistent with employment trends that capitalize on the elements of an arts, humanities and social sciences education as well as enhance the visibility of programs, specifically in the liberal arts. CAHSS endeavors not only to promote internal synergies and collaborations among its departments, but also to engage external partnerships with a focus on preparing graduates for a global workforce and/or higher education pursuits.
N.C. A&T is a public, land-grant, doctoral research institution and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade. With an enrollment of 15,275 students in Fall 2026, the university offers 59 undergraduate degree programs, 36 master’s programs, and 12 doctoral programs. It is America’s top producer of Black graduates in Engineering and Agricultural Science bachelor’s programs, as well as a top five producer in numerous additional disciplines, including Liberal Arts and Communications/Journalism. It also ranks no. 3 in master’s degrees awarded to Black graduates in Engineering Technologies and Related Fields, no. 4 in master’s degrees in Engineering, and no. 11 best business school for women in the nation.

A&T is classified as “R2-High Research Activity” in the Carnegie Classifications and is poised to achieve “R1-Very High Research Activity” status. Minimum Requirements
Terminal degree in a tenurable discipline in Visual & Performing Arts with significant administrative/teaching experience, preferably in a higher-education environment.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated excellence in teaching and creative/research activities in theater and/or film, consistent with eligibility for appointment/tenure at the rank of associate professor or professor.
Required License or Certification
