Role specification

The Journal Pathology was founded in 1892 and is the leading journal in its field, with an Impact Factor of 5.2 (2024). The Journal of Pathology: Clinical Research is its Open Access companion journal, published since 2015, with an Impact Factor of 3.7 (2024). The post of Associate Scientific Editor has been created in response to the increasingly complex nature, and volume, of the material submitted to the journals. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a biomedical research scientist to apply their research skills to a fresh challenge in publishing.

Main responsibilities include:

  1. Supporting the Scientific Editor and Senior Scientific Editor in the day-to-day management of the editorial functions of the Journals, working closely with the Editors in Chief. This includes maintaining triage and production databases, editing manuscripts, and correspondence with authors.
  2. Providing cover for members of the senior editorial team by mutual agreement
  3. Assessing submitted manuscripts in line with editorial policy, and in liaison with the editorial team selecting submissions suitable for external peer review
  4. Assisting with the editing of articles, ensuring compliance with editorial policies and procedures, supporting the organisation of issues of The Journal of Pathology and organising continuous online publication for The Journal of Pathology: Clinical Research
  5. Checking and reviewing page proofs, liaising with authors and the production team to resolve queries in line with editorial standards.
  6. Participating in meetings with the Publisher’s personnel as reasonably requested by the Society and the Publisher (usually online, occasionally in person).
  7. Using the editorial office system, currently ScholarOne Manuscripts™, to manage submissions and the peer review process, in liaison with the Editorial Office, the Editors-in-Chief and other editors. This role requires significant periods working on-screen and online
  8. Attending (virtually or in person) conferences as deemed appropriate by, and agreed in advance with, the Society and the Publisher, to assist in the promotion of the Journal. Registration, travel and expenses will be paid from an expense budget agreed between the Society and the Publisher.
