Los Angeles Trade Technical College (LATTC) is a two-year community college located in the downtown Los Angeles. Each semester, the college serves more than 15,000 students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. LATTC has a tradition of being a leader in academic and technical curriculum designed to prepare students for university studies and the workforce. The College's emphasis on student success makes it a national educational leader with a reputation for contextualized and accelerated learning.
Program Description: The LATTC Fashion Design Department is seeking a dynamic and innovative faculty member to teach a wide variety of Fashion Design courses. The ideal candidate will actively support student competency attainment, skill building, and successful course completion as measures of success. The assignment is Monday thru Friday and may include evening and weekend classes.
LATTC is now seeking to expand its outstanding faculty by offering two full-time tenure-track faculty positions for candidates qualified to teach for the Fashion Design program commencing in the Fall 2026 semester.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate's degree and six years verifiable industry experience, OR
- Bachelor's degree and two years verifiable industry experience.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disabled, and ethnic background of community college faculty, staff and students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
In accordance with its mission as a community college, instruction at LATTC focuses on lower division courses. Faculty members at LATTC are expected to facilitate student learning by designing varied and exciting learning environments. The regular weekly teaching load is 21 hours. Evening and/or weekend classes may be scheduled based on department needs. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Teach courses over an academic year in accordance with established course outline;
- Participate in the development and the assessment of student learning outcomes (SLO's);
- Maintain scheduled office hours for student contact;
- Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the academic field;
- Develop and update department course curricula including developing hybrid and/or online courses;
- Develop resources, materials, and strategies, including using multimedia technology platforms to teach students in a multicultural environment;
- Devote five hours weekly to campus responsibilities (committee obligations in accordance to faculty contract, accreditation, etc.);
- Teach courses in for Fashion Design;
- Assist in developing new courses and curricula;
- Assume departmental duties as assigned by the chairperson (e.g., participate in program review, plan and attend advisory committee meetings, revise course outlines, assist with student advisement, and participate actively on campus committees);
- Develop supplementary materials and incorporate instructional technology to complement textbooks, other published materials, and lecture presentations;
- Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff and students.
- Participate in College activities including: community outreach, student clubs and recruitment initiatives for the Fashion Design Program;
- Plan and organize instructional materials toward course objectives in accordance to the course outlines;
- Utilize a variety of teaching methodologies and promote active involvement of students in the learning experience;
- Prepare and grade class assignments, laboratory projects, and examinations;
- Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic, and student records and submit them in accordance with published deadlines;
- Assist the Department in increasing the transfer rate to 4-year colleges and universities;
- Possess initiative and organizational skills to achieve the goals and objectives of the Department;
- Participate actively in staff development and professional organizations to foster student success;
- Maintain professional and ethical academic standards of the Department and the College;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Relevant teaching experience in the field of Fashion Design in a post-secondary setting.
- Evidence of ability to teach beginning through advanced classes in sewing, sketching, patternmaking (manual and digital), draping, grading, photoshop/illustrator, portfolios, costuming and other related subjects.
- Openness to teaching in an online or hybrid format where applicable.
- Experience with manual pattern grading and computer pattern grading (such as Gerber, Lectra, Tuka).
- Experience with pattern digitizing, digital patterns, marker-making, and plotting.
- Experience with 3D pattern software.
- Skills and willingness to integrate technology, digital media, online learning management systems etc. into the teaching process.
- Sensitivity to the issues of a diverse and underserved student population.
- Experience with technical design including tech packs.
- Participation in professional and/or Fashion-related organizations.
- Recent experience (five to seven years) in an apparel manufacturing environment and/or costuming.
- Ability to collaborate with other faculty in a multidisciplinary Design and Media Arts Pathway.
NOTE: The newly hired instructors should be prepared to teach the full range of Fashion Design courses. The instructors will also hold student conference hours, attend department meetings, play an active role in program review and curricular revisions, be active on college committees-in particular participation in the accreditation process, participate in other activities/meetings required by the college and the District.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary ranges from $76,960 to $143,000 for the 10-month academic year. The selected candidate will be allocated within the salary range upon evaluation by the Los Angeles Community Colleges District (LACCD) academic recruitment unit. An excellent benefit package which includes medical, vision, dental, and life insurance is available for the employee and eligible dependents.
