Barnard Early-Career Faculty Fellow, History

Job Description

Barnard College seeks a full-time (early-career) Faculty Fellow to join the rich community of research, teaching, and praxis centered in the Department of History. This is a two-year residential research and teaching fellowship welcoming of early-career scholars from a broad range of social backgrounds, including those under-represented in academia. The fellowship is designed to help expand the breadth of scholars hired into tenure-track positions by providing valuable experience, skills, and mentorship. Faculty Fellows teach two undergraduate courses each year relevant to their scholarly interests and experience, conduct research and scholarship, and receive professional development support from the department, Barnard College, and Columbia University.

The History Department is committed to interdisciplinary approaches to the study of the past. We seek a scholar of early modern empires, whose work on concepts of social difference and distinction (e.g., complex paradigms of unfreedom, muti-ethnic and multi-religious port city community formations, histories of raza and casta) would bring a distinctive, bridging focus to comparative and connected histories across Indian and Atlantic oceanic world regions and geographies. We are especially interested in scholarship focused on novel approaches to understanding difference and hierarchy in the early modern world, with a focus on social identities, community formation, maritime networks, and economic exchange. Fellows would have the chance to draw on existing synergies with current department members at Barnard as well as Columbia.

Faculty Fellows teach two undergraduate courses (or their equivalent) relevant to their scholarly interests and experience, conduct research and scholarship, and receive mentoring and professional development support from Department of History, Barnard college, and Columbia University.

This is a two-year position beginning on July 1, 2026, with teaching responsibilities during the standard academic year from September to May.

On approximately January 20, 2026 the Department of History and the Faculty Diversity & Development committee will begin the review of applications, which continue until the position is filled. Please e-mail BFF2026@barnared.edu with any questions.
