Campus Police Officer
Job Summary
Incumbents patrol and inspect the campus and provide safety and security related services to all students, staff, faculty and visitors.
Essential Functions
- Patrol the campus by foot or vehicle and conducts security checks; monitor security cameras; lock and unlock facilities; and provide security services during events, to identify suspicious activity and ensure student, staff, faculty, and visitor safety
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance; work may involve transmitting and receiving information, performing first aid, contacting medical personnel, providing advisement, resolving conflicts, arresting individuals, and enforcing applicable laws
- Identify safety and student-conduct violations; conduct investigations; and enforce City, State, and Federal laws, and campus policies and procedures
- Enforce traffic and parking ordinances, to include identifying safety/traffic hazards, directing traffic, issuing traffic citations, assisting motorists, escorting vehicles, and identifying unattended vehicles
- Coordinate with staff, faculty, and community groups, and other internal/external personnel, departments, and/or agencies to maintain effective working relations and facilitate College and the Police Department’s operations
- May conduct training sessions for probationary campus police officers and public safety officers
- Perform administrative duties to include maintaining records, logs, and documentation of activities and incidents; assigning parking passes; providing general and specific information; and inspecting equipment for proper functioning
- Participate in campus training for students, faculty and staff, conduct investigations in traffic accidents, criminal violations of law, and local ordinances, by gathering evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, interrogating suspects, and prepare appropriate reports for submission to local prosecutor for prosecution of cases
- Conduct investigations into violations of MCC policies and procedures. Incumbent responsible for evidence collection to ensure successful prosecutions. Attends and provides evidence in court; evidence storage and inventory
- Produce internal reports and provide feedback on case status
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Physical Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma OR equivalent (G.E.D.)
- One (1) year of specialized or technical training
- Licensing Requirements: Missouri POST Class A license, United States Citizenship, Possession of a valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in law enforcement
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of principles and practices of patrol and crime prevention; applicable campus, local, State, and Federal laws and regulations; investigation principles and practices; report preparation techniques; customer service principles; interrogation techniques and scene management; law enforcement principles and practices; standard operating procedures, judicial procedures, civil and constitutional laws; conflict resolutions and problem-solving; computer operation and related software applications. Skilled in effective decision-making; applying applicable laws; monitoring campus facilities; investigating suspicious activity; maintaining records and preparing reports; providing customer service; operating applicable tools and equipment; using a computer and related software applications; utilizing communication and interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements: Positions in this class typically require balancing, climbing, crouching, grasping, hearing, keyboarding, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking. Ability to operate a motor vehicle (police patrols); light lifting (5 to 20 pounds) daily. Heavy lifting moving police equipment (20–50 pounds); Very heavy lifting to perform arrest or for rescues (over 50 pounds). Physical agility to respond to a scene quickly. Ability to qualify with department firearms. Incumbents may be exposed to extreme temperatures; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and other environmental conditions, such as challenging behaviors, imminent danger, and threatening environments.
