Capital Planning and Space Administration within MSU Finance is seeking to hire a creative leader to be an integral part of its team identifying and implementing strategic solutions for space and facilities needs ranging from short to long-term and unit-level to university-wide.
Position Summary
The Assistant Director initiates, plans, and directs activities associated with space planning, space utilization, and project management for the Capital Planning and Space Administration department within MSU Finance; works directly with colleges and academic units on evaluation of space and facility needs; leads cross-functional space management and planning committees. Supervises regular and student employees.
This is an on-campus, in-person position.
Position Duties
Facilitates and leads idea generation for space strategies and solutions, ranging from unit level needs to short and long-term institutional strategies. Leads and participates in Capital and Space initiatives, planning, organizing and implementing long and short-term objectives. (20%)
Receives, reviews, evaluates, and authorizes the execution of unit-initiated services requests. Develops and facilitates the execution of alterations and remodeling projects to address programmatic needs, improve space utilization, address code requirements, and to provide barrier free access. Prepares, directs or participates in the preparation of building program statements for major capital projects. (20%)
Consults, advises and negotiates with administrative unit heads in order to resolve space and facilities planning problems. (20%)
Supervises, mentors, coaches and develops space planner/project managers to maximize staff potential on space planning and facility projects from pre-planning through implementation, ensuring academic and university strategic goals are considered and met. Identifies needs and oversees assignment of workload among space planner/project managers. (20%)
Leads and participates in campus space planning committees and project teams. (10%)
Participates and assists MAU leadership in directing and coordinating audits for utilization of space, evaluation of needs, and interacts with departments in order to evaluate space and facility needs and provide advice and recommendations. (10%)
Minimum Qualifications
The job requires: knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business, Architecture, Urban Planning, or a related field; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in space planning, facilities management, and project management, including experience supervising or leading professional staff; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Five or more years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in space management, space planning, architecture, engineering or related field.
- Strong reasoning, judgement, and communication skills.
- Strong memory and ability to connect many functions and/or variables.
- Must enjoy problem solving and working in a fast paced and complex systems environment with the ability to move from big picture to details.
- Possess the ability to work successfully with a variety of constituencies in an educational institution and business environment.
