Capital Portfolio Management Consultant
Position Overview
The Ohio State University’s Innovation and Commercialization team within the Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge (ERIK) utilizes knowledge and expertise to manage equity compliance, a portfolio of startups, and process development and implementation under the direction of the Associate Director, Capital and Translation Development. The Capital Portfolio Management Consultant will play a critical role in managing the growth of the capital and translation ecosystem at The Ohio State University, contributing to the university's broader innovation ecosystem under the direction of the Associate Director, Capital & Translation Development. Success in this roll will depend on a blend of strategic acumen, project management expertise, and influential leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing equity received from licensing transactions and entrepreneurship activities (“Innovation Equity”).
- Independently performing ongoing monitoring and engagement with the university’s portfolio companies external to the university and working closely with Ohio State faculty.
- Collaborating with other teams within Innovation and Commercialization, including, technology licensing, compliance, and finance to ensure streamlined processes and efficiencies.
- Participating in onboarding new team members, including training, mentoring, and providing guidance as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Six years of relevant experience.
- Specialized knowledge proficiency in venture capital investment activities, university technology commercialization, and new venture formation processes.
- Knowledge of early-stage debt and equity financings, cap tables and ability to perform pro forma analysis of equity holdings/valuations; experience negotiating and managing licensing agreements, including compliance with agreement terms.
- Familiarity with corporate governance documents and venture-related transaction documents, including financings, mergers and acquisitions, shareholder consents and dissolutions.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, detailed-oriented, able to maintain good working relationships within the organization and with external stakeholders.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Proactive individual contributor with demonstrated experience maintaining high quality work product.
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced technical degree or MBA.
- 8-12 years of relevant experience working in a university setting.
- Experience with Carta and other cap table management programs.
- Experience implementing new software programs and process development.
- Prior portfolio management experience.
- Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to interact with others in a consistently positive manner, facilitate communication across teams or departments, and gain consensus around decision making.
- Experience providing training and guidance to colleagues.
