Duties & Responsibilities:

A. Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the VCU Division of Cardiothoracic surgery is to both provide the Mid-Atlantic’s most advanced, patient-oriented, cost-effective and safe cardiothoracic services, as well as to create the finest training environment for the region’s future cardiothoracic specialists. The current environment increasingly mandates leading both regional and national quality initiatives in cardiothoracic surgery.

B. Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal: The Instructor in Cardiothoracic surgery will play a central role in the heart and lung transplant program, serving as a key operative leader in the evaluation and surgical recovery of donor organs. This position requires expertise in cardiothoracic anatomy, donor assessment, and organ preservation techniques, with the ability to independently perform heart and lung procurements in collaboration with national organ‑sharing networks. The surgeon will work closely with transplant physicians, coordinators, and perfusion teams to ensure optimal graft quality and seamless communication throughout the procurement process.

In addition to procurement responsibilities, the surgeon will participate in the full continuum of transplant care, including assisting in the recipient surgery, shared call coverage, inpatient management of pre‑ and post‑transplant patients, participation in the cardiac surgery, ECMO call schedule. Responsibilities include managing complex cardiothoracic conditions, supporting mechanical circulatory support patients, and providing timely operative and critical care interventions as needed. The ideal candidate demonstrates clinical excellence, strong communication skills, and a commitment to advancing high‑quality cardiothoracic and thoracic organ transplant care.

C. Responsibilities:

1. Teaching: Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in cardiothoracic surgery CT surgery residents, general surgery residents as well as medical and undergraduate students. Must be able to mentor cardiothoracic fellows with graded surgery responsibilities.

2. Research: Clinical research and trial participation encouraged.

3. Service: Faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

• Demonstrated training in cardiothoracic surgery and thoracic transplantation
• Virginia state licensure
• Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence
• Ability to function in a complex matrixed environment
• Effective skills in managing conflict
• Commitment to clinical excellence, education and clinical research.
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Salary Range: Commensurate
