Essential Job Duties:
Are you an advanced veterinary technician passionate about wildlife conservation and specialized nursing? The NC State College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Carnivore Medicine Clinical Technician to provide high-level, primary technical support for our Red Wolf program, alongside secondary support to our world-class Exotic Animal Medicine Clinical Service.
In this dynamic role, you will blend advanced clinical nursing, intricate anesthesia monitoring, and laboratory diagnostics with program administration and the mentorship of the next generation of veterinary professionals.
Key Responsibilities
Advanced Clinical Nursing & Anesthesia
- Anesthesia & Sedation: Confidently administer and monitor anesthesia, precisely evaluating patient depth and vital signs using established parameters such as outward involuntary physical response (i.e. jaw tone, palpebral reflex, eye position), blood pressure, ECG, pulse oximetry, heart rate, respiratory rate, and ventilation status.
- Pharmacology Mastery: Demonstrate high proficiency in metric conversions, drug dose calculations, solution preparation, and IV fluid rates.
- Diagnostics: Run essential in-house lab testing, including PCV, Total Protein, Urinalysis, and comprehensive fecal analyses (direct smears, floats, gram stains, and acid-fast stains).
Program Administration & Operations
- Manage day-to-day operations for the Red Wolf program (scheduling, inventory control, and purchasing).
- Ensure accurate clinical billing, treatment sheet compliance, and meticulous record-keeping.
- Maintain medical equipment and ensure strict adherence to hospital Infectious Disease and safety protocols.
Communication & Student Education
- Assist in the clinical instruction, training, and orientation of veterinary students, vet tech students, and interns in carnivore restraint and nursing care.
- Serve as a core communicator, fostering seamless collaboration between the Red Wolf program, exotic services, and all ancillary hospital departments.
What You Bring to the Team
- Experience: Strong background in advanced veterinary nursing; experience with wildlife, exotics, or carnivore medicine is highly preferred.
- Technical Skills: High proficiency in anesthetic monitoring, veterinary math/calculations, and laboratory diagnostics.
- Leadership & Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with a passion for teaching and mentoring students.
- Physical Capabilities: Ability to stand, bend, and assist with animal restraint for extended periods, and safely lift/carry up to 50 pounds.

Minimum Experience/Education: Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated advanced veterinary nursing skills, including safe restraint of exotic/carnivore species, catheter placement, sample collection, and high-level patient care.
- Proven experience administering and monitoring anesthesia in high-risk, exotic, or wild carnivore patients, with proficiency in evaluating anesthetic depth and utilizing advanced monitoring equipment.
- Exceptional proficiency in complex medical calculations, including anesthetic drug dosing, emergency drug calculations, constant rate infusions (CRIs), fluid therapy rates, and metric conversions.
- Demonstrated competency in performing and interpreting in-house laboratory diagnostics, including cytology, urinalysis, hematology (PCV/TP), and advanced fecal analysis.
- Strong organizational, billing, and electronic medical record-keeping skills, paired with exceptional interpersonal communication to effectively collaborate with clinicians, students, interns, and external partners.
Required license or certification: NC Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or ability to obtain NC Registration within 6 months of date of hire.
