Job Description
Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm (40 hours per week)
Position Summary
Reporting to the Senior Building Trades Supervisor, the Carpenter performs a variety of woodworking and repair duties essential to the upkeep of Vassar's campus. This is a full time, in-person, CWA Union position for the Full Year.
Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of woodworking duties, including but not limited to rough carpentry, finish carpentry, installation and repair of hardware, flooring, windows, doors, etc.
- Perform all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established Vassar College and departmental policies and procedures.
- Upkeep of all tools and maintaining all Vassar owned equipment assigned to the employee.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment daily.
- Communicate and work effectively with other trades.
- Perform other duties as assigned to assist the department in obtaining and maintaining its mission.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities
- High school diploma, vocational training or equivalent required.
- A minimum of five years experience in all phases of carpentry. Academic trade or schooling is a plus, however it is not a substitute for experience.
- Furniture repair experience and some knowledge of cabinet work.
- Knowledgeable in the use of various hand and power tools and their maintenance relative to all scopes of the carpentry.
- Knowledge of carpentry methods and mathematics necessary.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, including understanding, speaking, reading and writing. Good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license for at least 2 years.
- Ability to perform repeated bending, squatting, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to stand and walk for a prolonged period of time.
- Ability to move, position, place and transport objects up to and including 75 pounds.
- Ability to ascend and descend ladders and scaffolding.
- Willingness to work overtime as available. Overtime is assigned according to seniority guidelines.
Compensation
$37.52 per hour
