The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 19 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

In the context of the upgrade of the injectors of the ESRF accelerator complex, you will join the Beam Dynamics group to work on the design of a 6GeV electron linac and participate in the development and implementation of a test facility for high gradient accelerating structures. You will develop the beam dynamics model to characterize the single and multiparticle dynamics from the electron source to the injection into the storage ring and finally design the Linac optics and magnetic layout to achieve the required performance. Finally, you will support the Beam Dynamics group for the preparation and implementation of the Linac test facility.

Your mission will be the following:

  • Develop the models required to simulate and study single and multi-particle beam dynamics effect for a 6 GeV electron linac injector for ESRF
  • Using these models, design the linac magnetic layout and correction schemes required to achieve performance goals
  • Verify that the beam parameters at the exit of the linac are compatible with high efficiency injection in the ESRF-EBS storage ring
  • Participate in the preparation work and implementation of a test facility for high accelerating gradient RF structures
  • Publish the results in accelerator physics related journals and conference proceedings.

Further information may be obtained from Simone Liuzzo (+33 4 76 88 26 56).

Requirements:

  • Degree allowing enrollment for a PhD (such as MSc, Master 2, Laurea or equivalent 300 ECTS) in Applied Physics or Electrical Engineering
  • Proficiency in Python and object-oriented programming
  • Strong general interest in accelerator design and beam tuning and optimization is desirable
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)
  • Self-motivated and self-driven

Your shall be enrolled in a University/Doctoral School as a condition of your hiring.

Contract of two years renewable for one year.

What we offer:

  • Join an innovative international research institute, with a workforce from 38 different countries
  • Collaborate with global experts to advance science and address societal challenges
  • Come and live in a vibrant city, in the heart of the Alps, and Europe's Green Capital 2022
  • Enjoy a workplace designed to support your quality of life
  • Benefit from our competitive compensation and allowances package, including financial support for your relocation to Grenoble
