The mission of the Internal medicine residency program is to train the well-rounded internist of the future who are compassionate, caring, competent, and capable of providing medical care to patients in a variety of settings. We focus on five pillars for competency in training – clinical, scholarship, teaching, leadership and resilience. We strive to create a collegial and supportive setting for intellectual growth, to partner with residents in contributing to the science of medicine, to contribute to innovations in medical education, to partner with residents to gracefully accept the challenges of providing care to the medically underserved, and to promote lifelong learning in a rapidly changing healthcare environment.

Chief Purpose of Position

The Chief Resident in Internal Medicine is a unique position that allows a young physician to develop leadership skills and introduces him/her to academic medicine. Although technically a faculty position in the department, the Chief Resident functions as an integral link between faculty and resident physicians, and therefore must maintain good communication channels between both groups. The position allows for the development of administrative skills since the Chief Resident functions as a manager, and for the development of teaching skills in Internal Medicine. Because of the flexibility of this position, the Chief Resident is allowed to grow in many ways, and may choose to pursue independent scientific investigation, formal education in public health or health administration, or to devote additional time to clinical medicine. Above all, the Chief Resident is a role model for house officers and medical students.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Teaching:

Attends ALL Housestaff conferences to provide introductions, audiovisual assistance, and record attendance. Coordinates the following conferences: Inpatient Morning Report, Ambulatory Morning Report, Clinicopathologic Conference, Core Conferences, Journal Club, Intern Conference, EM/IM Journal Club, Clinical Reasoning Conference, Emergency Response Simulation Training, Reflective Practitioner Curriculum, Health Disparities Curriculum. Assists in educational program development. Facilitates appropriate remedial measures for educational or professional deficiencies. Coordinates discharge summary training and evaluation. Assists in the evaluation of clinical performance of house officers and participates in the Clinical Competency Committee. Participates as a small group leader in the Practice of Clinical Medicine. Teaches MSIII students on the IM clerkship. Serves as a core educator for 3-5 preliminary medicine interns. Assist IMIG sponsors (PD, APD, ACD) with scheduling and running IMG activities – to include lunch sessions and workshops. Each chief will participate in the Annual Chief Medical Resident Grand Rounds presentation. Planning and support of the Immersive Experience in Physiology course.

Research:

Participates in a programmatic improvement, medical education, quality improvement, or research project.

Service:

Participates in Clinical Competency Committee Meetings for IM, Med-Peds, and EM-IM residency programs. Participates in twice weekly leadership rounds. Attends faculty ward orientation. Assists with nursing evaluations. Participates on the Program Evaluation Committee (two chiefs). Serves on ACC Clinic committees (ambulatory chief resident). Support with recruitment and intern orientation.

Clinical:

• Ward attending – 8 weeks ward attending on Inpatient General Medicine Service (6 weeks at MCVH, 2 weeks at VAMC), may vary by primary assignment (ie – QI chief will be at VA, ambulatory chief may opt not to do inpatient time)
• Participate in emergency back-up coverage for General Medicine Service at MCVH.
• Participate in night medicine rounds as needed at both MCVH and VAMC with the teaching nocturnist and site director and/or inpatient APD.
• Precept weekly in ACC resident clinic (shared between four chief medical residents) and VAMC clinic

Other (for instance administrative duties, etc.):

Covers the chief on-call pager on a rotating bases with other chief residents. Assists with resident scheduling. Provides support to conference speakers. Troubleshoot site-specific problems. Assist in managing program social media accounts (Twitter for medical education – lead by conference chief) and Instagram (for social connection, program announcements, etc. – lead by recruitment chief). Facilitates smooth clinical operations through administrative, educational, and if necessary, disciplinary support. Supports the Program Director and Associate Program Director as needed. Attends weekly meetings with program director.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

• MD or equivalent
• Graduate of VCU Internal Medicine Residency Program in good standing with the program
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty at VCU

Salary Range: Commensurate
