General Summary

The Odessa College Communications Faculty member is responsible for teaching all assigned courses and supporting the department in its mission to serve students and advance academic excellence in alignment with Odessa Colleges institutional goals. The role will contribute to fostering a student-centered learning environment that promotes engagement, achievement, and persistence. In support of this mission, the role will actively participate in departmental initiatives and collaborate with colleagues to enhance instructional quality and student success outcomes.

Specific Position Duties

  • Teaches assigned courses within the curriculum and supports the academic mission of Odessa College by promoting student success and engagement.
  • Delivers instruction across all modalities, including web-based, web-enhanced, and interactive television (ITV) courses, as requested, using a variety of instructional technologies to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Teaches Odessa CollegeNow (dual credit) courses at designated locations throughout the West Texas area, supporting early access to college-level education for high school students.
  • Assists with student recruitment, advising, and retention efforts and actively participates in departmental, college-wide, and community committees and initiatives.
  • Maintains current knowledge in the teaching field and demonstrates the ability and willingness to teach a variety of courses, schedules, locations, and delivery methods, as needed and reasonably requested by the college.
  • Designs and delivers appropriately challenging coursework that supports student growth and helps learners reach their full potential.
  • Provides clear written expectations for students, including syllabi, policies, assignment instructions, and grading criteria.
  • Administers assessments aligned with course content, including comprehensive final examinations that evaluate overall mastery of course objectives.
  • Affirms the worth and dignity of all individuals and upholds the right of all students to learn through effective instructional practices.
  • Maintains a positive, inclusive, and academically rigorous learning and assessment environment—whether traditional, online, or distance—that encourages open exchange of ideas while promoting academic integrity and objectivity.
  • Prepares thoroughly for all instructional activities, arrives promptly for scheduled classes, labs, and related obligations, and delivers course content in a clear, organized, and understandable manner.
  • Addresses student concerns, including questions, feedback, and input, both in class and through scheduled office hours, timely electronic communication, and other appropriate channels.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree with 18 or more graduate hours in Speech from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach students across a wide range of ages, including high school students enrolled in dual credit classes.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence.
