Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Residence Life, the Community Director is responsible for the management of housing communities ranging in size from 300-1000 residential students, and the supervision of 7-50+ undergraduate student workers in varying positions and may also supervise a graduate Assistant Community Director. The Community Director orchestrates activities that integrate the academic and social life of students.

This is a live-on position that requires on-call duty responses during the evenings, weekends and weather events.

**The Community Director position is an entry-level, live-on position intended to provide candidates with initial higher education Student Development work experience. Based on the needs of the University and employee performance, a collateral assignment will be assigned no later than the third year of employment in this role in order to prepare the Community Director for future opportunities in Residence Life and/or Higher Education and will be performed during regular work hours.**

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise, schedule, evaluate, develop and direct the work of student employees within the assigned community, including assisting in development of pre-semester and in-service student staff training programs or events, and workshops for a variety of staff lines; supervises and evaluates student employees; manages the payroll process for student staff.
  • Implement and maintain the reception desk and community office operations. This responsibility may be shared with an Assistant Community Director (ACD) depending on the community.
  • Promote academic and personal development of community members through implementation of a residential curriculum of programming and activities; provision of counseling, information, referrals; supporting and advising a strong and responsive hall government; and administration of student conduct process, and participation in collaborative retention and relationship building initiatives with campus stakeholders. Advise Residence Life student organization(s) as assigned.
  • Administer residential facility(s) housing 140-1100 students, including: preparation and implementation of building opening and closing processes and check-in and check-out of residents; process room changes appropriately; prepare reports in cooperation with student staff input, ensure staff coverage and building security during all times that facilities are occupied; and promote positive working relationships with maintenance, custodial, and physical plant workers to maintain facility-related safety standards. Maintain contact and collaborate with the Capstone On-Campus Management Director of Facilities and Administration, when applicable and appropriate.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call duty schedule and respond to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis.
  • Serve as first line of response during emergencies and critical incidents, including maintenance and repair emergencies, to mitigate risks to student safety and implement associated protocols and reporting responsibilities effectively and efficiently. Emergencies of a particularly serious nature such as sexual assault, suicide or attempt, physical assault or emotional crises are to be reported immediately to the manager on call.
  • Assist the Associate Director of Operations and the Director of Operations and Logistics regarding facilities related matters, such as damage billing, vandalism, maintenance concerns, service requests, etc. Plan and review emergency plan/management with Capstone On-Campus Management team when appropriate.
  • Promote fire safety through programs, inspections, and scheduled fire drills.
  • Coordinate consistent security measures in each building, including utilization of the entrance area card key systems and hardware, the facilitation of guest sign-in procedures, and the implementation of an educationally grounded crime prevention program.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, including departmental and campus-wide committees, presentation of programs at regional or larger conferences related to residence life and/or student development, and cooperative programming with other departments. ○ This includes demonstrating ongoing commitment to growth by completing a minimum of 3 professional development activities annually, which will be reviewed during performance evaluations.
  • Assist in performing central office duties and procedures assigned during fall, winter, and spring breaks and summer sessions. Provide additional coverage responsibilities for busy weekends, semester openings and closing, open houses, accepted students’ days, homecoming, Red Hawk Frenzy, Hall Council meetings and other programs/events as required.
  • Attend regularly scheduled Residence Life staff meetings, Student Development and Campus Life Division meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
  • This position is designed as an entry-level role. Employees are expected to leverage professional development opportunities to prepare for advancement within or beyond the University. In the third year of this assignment the employee will participate in a formal collateral assignment to be determined in the second half of their second year to explore further career opportunities within or outside of Residence Life.
  • Meet regularly with the Assistant Director of Residence Life.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Management retains the right to change or add job duties at any time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Student Personnel, Student Affairs or Higher Education Administration, or related field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues facing college students.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • This is a live-on position through the duration of the term of employment.

PREFERRED:

  • Experience as a student leader or graduate student developing residence hall communities, providing education and personal support for students through programming, responding to student concerns and behaviors, advising hall councils, facility and administrative management, and participation in department initiatives.

Salary Range
$55,142.18-$63,410.34 Annually
