Community Outreach Specialist (Neurology)

The Department of Neurology is seeking a Community Outreach Specialist for the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (JHADRC) who will assist with community outreach and recruitment efforts for research programs on aging, memory loss, and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). The position involves a wide range of activities that are instrumental in supporting the recruitment and retention of diverse participants; increasing community awareness on topics related to memory loss, including the importance of ADRD research and expanding the visibility of the JHADRC in the local community. Position responsibilities will be carried out under the day-to-day supervision of Cassandra Gipson, Sr. Community Outreach Specialist of the JHADRC Outreach, Recruitment, and Engagement Core, which is led by Dr. Corinne Pettigrew.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the recruitment of diverse research participants for studies affiliated with the JHADRC.
  • Become knowledgeable about general issues related to aging and dementia, and the different types of research.
  • Give talks about brain health and memory loss in the community (e.g., senior centers, faith-based communities) and host resource tables at community events.
  • Effectively represent JHADRC-affiliated research studies to community partners and members of the community.
  • Complete screenings of potential research participants and subsequent follow-up. Complete eligibility screenings with potential research participants, refer participants to appropriate study coordinators associated with the JHADRC, and track status of referrals using an in-house database.
  • Oversee the JHADRC’s College Volunteer program. Coordinate program logistics, implement student trainings, facilitate volunteer outreach activities, and collect program feedback, etc.
  • Assist with planning and executing new and existing outreach and education programs. These includes programs sponsored by the JHADRC’s Memory and Aging Community Advisory Board (MACAB), as well as other partner organizations. Activities include event planning, drafting advertising materials, assisting with day-of-event logistics, and program evaluation.
  • Participate in activities that are important for participant retention, e.g. meet participants at their first JHADRC study visit, assist in organizing annual retention events, draft newsletter content, and send targeted mailings.
  • Attend team meetings and assist with other activities as needed, e.g. maintain a library of educational brochures on healthy aging and ADRD, develop outreach content for community audiences, etc.
  • Responsibilities involve travel in the Greater Baltimore area, including travel to community events. A flexible daily schedule and weekend work will sometimes be necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Two years of related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY (Commensurate w/exp.)
