Description of Position
The Engineering Department at Diablo Valley College is seeking qualified part-time Construction instructors for teaching lecture and lab courses at the Pleasant Hill campus in Fall 2026 and/or future semesters. The department offers associate degrees and certificates of achievement in multiple construction programs, including Construction Management, Building Inspection, Supervision and Superintendency, and Pre-Apprenticeship. These programs include the study of residential, commercial, and heavy construction practices. We offer courses in construction processes, materials of construction, occupational safety, print reading, estimating, management, legal aspects of the construction industry, and many hands-on courses. Teaching assignments and courses taught may vary depending on student enrollment and the current needs of the department, and many construction courses are offered in the evening. Applicants must have a minimum of a Masters degree in Engineering Technology (or the equivalent) OR a bachelors degree plus two years of professional experience in the construction field OR an associate degree plus six years of professional experience in the construction field. Those with excellent teamwork and communication skills and an interest and/or experience in supporting a highly diverse student population with a wide range of racial, ethnic, academic, and socio-economic backgrounds, gender identities, and abilities are encouraged to apply. Candidates with prior teaching experience are preferred; however, applicants with no prior teaching experience but a strong aptitude and interest in teaching are also encouraged to apply.
Duties and Responsibilities
Adjunct Faculty duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- providing instruction in accordance with established curriculum, course outlines and class schedules;
- creating and maintaining an environment which emphasizes learning, encourages free discussion of ideas and critical thinking;
- evaluating progress of students concerning educational matters and grades student work;
- meeting with students outside of class;
- maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;
- maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter areas;
- fulfilling professional responsibilities of a part-time/temporary faculty member;
- maintaining accurate academic records;
- performing other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience
The applicant must possess one of the following qualifications (earned degrees must be from an accredited college/university):
EDUCATION:
Any bachelors degree or higher AND two years of professional experience OR Any associate degree AND six years of professional experience.
Desirable Qualifications
- Interest and/or experience in supporting a highly diverse student population with a wide range of racial, ethnic, academic, socio-economic backgrounds, and abilities.
- Active or recent industry experience in construction-related fields such as project management, estimating, general contracting, or a skilled trade, with the ability to connect real-world practice to classroom instruction.
- Possession of a relevant professional license or certification, such as a General Contractors License, ICC certification, LEED accreditation, or other industry credential.
Salary
Adjunct instructor classroom faculty pay rate is $77.87-$128.97 per hour (up to $151.16).
