Step into the future of Engineering Biology with a PhD that puts you at the centre of designing and manufacturing next-generation virus-like particles (VLPs) for RNA and DNA delivery. These biological particles are key to the medicines and biotechnologies of tomorrow — and your project will help transform how they’re made.
Working at the National Physical Laboratory and the University of Strathclyde, you'll develop a continuous microfluidic process that creates these particles with nanoscale accuracy and precision, speed and sustainability in mind. You will be involved in the design and characterisation of VLPs as well as in the testing of their ability to package and deliver genes of interest into human cells. You’ll be exposed to cutting-edge capabilities such as AI, high throughput measurements and automated biofoundry, and will join a vibrant, supportive research community, gaining experience with cutting-edge equipment, emerging measurement technologies, and real-world applications spanning healthcare, biotech, and advanced manufacturing.

This studentship is open to applicants who meet UKRI’s home‑fee eligibility criteria, which generally includes UK-domiciled applicants and those with the appropriate residency status.
