Contractually Limited Assistant Professor
Job Title: Contractually Limited
Position is covered by the Agreement between the University of Guelph and University of Guelph Faculty Association Unit 1
Temporary full-time from 09/01/2026 to 08/31/2028
The Department of Chemistry in the College of Computational, Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Guelph invites applications for a two-year contractually limited (CL), teaching-focused position at the Assistant Professor level (rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience). This appointment is intended to strengthen instructional capacity and continuity across the required Chemistry curriculum areas. The Department has a strong commitment to high-quality teaching in large, multi-section core offerings and sustained pedagogical consistency across terms.
The instructional areas supported and specific course assignments will be determined by timetabling needs. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate chemistry at all levels with a special focus on first year courses.
Given the shared curriculum structure in which students from multiple programs take common core courses, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to engage diverse student cohorts in large, interdisciplinary classes and contribute to consistent learning outcomes across sections and terms.
Teaching load and Assignment Accounting
This is a teaching-focused appointment. The successful candidate will normally be assigned a minimum of five (5) teaching assignments annually over the appointment period, with their remaining effort devoted to service and curricular contributions supporting program delivery.
Teaching-assignment definition (multi-section counting): For workload purposes, each scheduled section taught by the candidate is counted as one (1) teaching assignment, course coordination activities that support consistency across sections is also counted as one (1) teaching assignment. Therefore, where a course is offered in multiple sections, and the candidate is assigned to teach more than one section, each section is counted separately toward the five (5) teaching assignments.
Service contributions may include (as appropriate): instructional planning, participation in teaching initiatives, contributions to continuous improvement of core curriculum delivery, and service committees within the department or the college level.
Qualifications
Applicants who have obtained Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Chemistry and earned a doctorate (PhD) in Chemistry or related discipline by the start date of the appointment are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an excellent teaching track record and evidence of effective instruction in settings such as large lectures, laboratories, tutorials, workshops, and project-based learning environments, as relevant. University-level teaching experience (beyond a teaching assistant role) is preferred. Evidence of strong student satisfaction and positive student feedback will be an asset.
Teaching dossier requirements
To provide evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry, applicants should submit a teaching dossier that includes:
- A statement describing teaching philosophy, approach, interests, and experience across relevant pedagogical settings (e.g., classroom, active learning, laboratory, tutorials, workshops, small-group and individual mentorship)
- Evidence of successful teaching (e.g., peer evaluations, teaching awards, unsolicited student feedback, or other appropriate indicators)
- Identify the instructional levels/areas in which the candidate is qualified and willing to teach, stating if applicable i) any prior experience teaching large and/or multi-section courses, and ii) readiness to contribute to consistent delivery across multiple sections and terms.
Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI)
EDI is considered essential to academic excellence in the Chemistry Department, College of Computational, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and University of Guelph. Applicants must submit a statement demonstrating their commitment to EDI in teaching and learning.
Term and Appointment
The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of a Contractually Limited Assistant Professor, initiating their employment with the University with a term of two (2) year in accordance with the UGFA Collective Agreement, Article 19. A Letter of Appointment outlining more specific responsibilities will be provided.
