Responsibilities include administrative, production, and teaching duties.

Administrative duties may include: co-manage a costume shop budget with faculty Costume Shop Manager (CSM); co-manage hired student (FWS) labor; assist with repairs and maintenance on equipment and tools in costume shop/lab; manage general maintenance, organization, and cleanliness of costume shop, dressing rooms, fitting area, and costume storage areas (utilizing student labor); maintain a safe working and learning environment in the shop and adjacent areas; assist CSM in maintaining costume storage, reorganizing and eliminating surplus items as necessary (utilizing student labor); manage internal and external costume loans or rentals.

Production duties may include: support CSM by executing, and/or supervising student labor on day-to-day work to achieve costume designer’s desired effects on all nature of costumes, whether built, pulled, purchased, rented, or otherwise; support CSM by conducting the day-to-day work to execute required builds and alterations; support costume designer; attend any necessary costume fittings, production meetings, and first day of technical rehearsal; manage/organize understudy costume needs; supervise costume strikes: laundry, cleaning, and restocking of clothing.

Teaching duties may include: teach costume practicum courses (THTR183, THTR282) in the costume shop with both skilled and unskilled student labor, tasked with executing fitting notes and preparing the costumes for stage. May also teach sections of THTR 151 Costume Technology I.

This position is responsible for performing other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.

Minimum qualifications include BA/BFA in theatre, excellent sewing skills, some knowledge of draping and patternmaking, good knowledge of costume shop equipment and basic maintenance, knowledge of theatre and costume shop procedures, basic dye skills; and an understanding of the UIC mission and experience teaching populations that reflect UIC’s student body. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Preferred qualifications include a graduate degree in theatre design, production, or technology; some knowledge of wigs and/or theatre make-up; teaching experience at the college or university level.
