Hampton University is seeking a dynamic Dean for the School of Liberal Arts and Education to take the program to the next level. The Dean is a 12-month administrative appointment and reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost.
Duties and Responsibilities
Administrative/Fiscal Management/Fundraising
- Establish and maintain academic goals/strategies for the School of Liberal Arts and Education to advance the program.
- Receive and review dossiers for tenure and promotion.
- Conduct evaluations of chairs and faculty using performance contracts, student evaluations, and observations of teaching performance.
- Process and recommend salary increments from chairs and faculty.
- Develop innovative long-range plans and curriculum review with a goal to advance the program.
- Provide guidance in the development of program budgets.
- Facilitate pursuit of accreditation by non-accredited programs and continued accreditation of previously accredited programs.
- Serve as a mentor/role model to faculty who desire advancement to leadership roles.
- Secure 1/3 of operational budget through grants, with emphasis on research grants.
Institutional Leadership
- Demonstrate initiative in improving academic programs of the college.
- Enhance the prestige of the college through professional activities, research, publications, and creative and scholarly activities.
- Participate in non-mandatory cultural and professional activities of the department, school and college.
- Assume responsibility for institutional committee objectives.
Instructional Leadership
- Provide leadership in curriculum development while maintaining accrediting standards.
- Monitor academic programs in terms of accreditation standards in disciplines within department/division and/or school.
- Establish/maintain a well-defined counseling and advisement program for students that results in increased retention and the development of tutorial programs.
- Provide leadership in developing, reviewing, revising, or deleting programs within the school to ensure the advancement of the school.
- Provide leadership to faculty in proposal writing, research, and other scholarly/creative activities.
- Provide the leadership in implementing accountability programs for majors in the area.
- Teach a minimum of one course per semester.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Doctoral degree required in a program within the liberal arts or relevant field found in the School of Liberal Arts and Education.
- Ten or more years of work experience in the liberal arts or a related field with progressive management / leadership responsibility.
- An exceptional record of accomplishments as a leader with proven ability to manage the complexity of an academic environment.
- A significant leadership role in a preferably research-intensive university, with the ability to demonstrate strategic and implementation skills, particularly with respect to balancing the university’s mission of education and research.
- Significant administrative experience with academic, staff, and support personnel.
- Experience with accreditation agencies, professional organizations, and university governance.
- Demonstrated leadership in grant writing, fundraising, and income-generating activities with alumni, community volunteers, and advisory councils.
- Senior-level administrative expertise that has included strategic and operational planning; preparation of budgets; effective management of resources within a budget including allocations, grants, and contributions from state and federal sources, as well as foundations and other donors; personnel organization and management; and student and faculty recruiting.
