Position Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Dental Assistant II within the Office for Clinical Affairs at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM). The Dental Assistant II provides support to students and faculty in the RSDM patient care clinics. The Dental Assistant II also performs work related to the care, sterilization, packing, and disbursement of equipment and supplies. Additionally, the Dental Assistant II maintains all aspects of sterilization procedures related to dental instruments and supplies associated with patient care within the various clinical operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Issues equipment, instruments and supplies to students and faculty. Performs duties relating to clinic dispensary as assigned.
  • Assists dental students chairside in the delivery of quality oral health care.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies, loaned instruments and equipment according to department policy. Restocks equipment and supplies in the dispensary and clinic reporting depleted items following the established procedure.
  • Checks returned instruments and prepares them for sterilization. Delivers to and retrieves instruments from Central Sterilization according to department schedule.
  • Examines equipment to detect leaks, worn or loose parts, or other indications of disrepair, verifying that equipment functions properly. Requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair or replacement, and removes defective equipment.
  • Exposes & scans digital radiographs using digital sensor or phosphor plate.
  • Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety and environmental and infection control standards.
  • Serves as Sterilization Assistant. Operates and monitors washer/disinfectors, steam autoclaves, sonic washers and other sterilizing equipment. Decontaminates, processes and sterilizes instruments and equipment with proper handling to prevent loss or damage. Ensures quality and consistency of the sterilization process.
  • Performs monitoring tests on units. Maintains records of quality assurance procedures, loads completed, items in loads, and maintenance procedures performed.
  • Follows Standard Precautions, insuring and maintaining a safe, clean, sanitary & time efficient working environment by adhering to RSDM infection control policy and complying with federal, state and departmental protocols.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Sitting/standing for prolonged periods, frequently walking, bending and reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive).
Must have the ability to lift/push/pull greater than 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Noisy, busy clinical and sterilization area, temperature fluctuations (hot and cold).
