Departmental Lecturer in German

About the role

The post will involve advanced teaching and academic research in German.

The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching of German within the Sub-Faculty of German by offering 16 hours of lectures or seminars per year (to be determined in consultation with the Sub-Faculty, but drawing on the appointee’s expertise). They will also be responsible for providing undergraduate tuition in German language and literature at Jesus and Oriel Colleges and playing a part in running Modern Languages in the Colleges.

About you

You will be a committed and intellectually rigorous scholar with a strong academic background in German language, literature, and culture, ideally encompassing the period from the late eighteenth century to the present. You will demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching, with the ability to deliver lectures, seminars, and tutorials to a high standard across a range of core and optional papers. You will be capable of teaching translation both from and into German. You will also possess the pastoral sensitivity and organisational acumen required to support students’ academic progress and wellbeing. A collaborative approach to working with colleagues, including in the context of undergraduate admissions and course administration.

You will have good organisational and interpersonal skills, be committed to high-quality teaching and student support, and be prepared to work collaboratively across colleges.

Teaching materials will be provided to support the preparation of courses, especially in early modern literature.
