Departmental Lecturer in Global and Area Studies
Since its launch in 2021, the MPhil in Global and Area Studies has introduced innovative and critical approaches to the field of Area Studies, combining comparative, global, and transnational perspectives while remaining grounded in local contexts as sites of knowledge production. Grade & Salary:
Grade 7: £39,424 – £47,779 per annum
About the Role:
The successful candidate will lecture, supervise, examine, and provide course administration for postgraduate students on the MPhil in Global and Area Studies programme, while also contributing to the wider intellectual life of OSGA. The postholder will additionally have the opportunity to conduct independent research.
The role includes convening, teaching, and developing qualitative research methods classes, contributing to the core courses “Competing Approaches in Area Studies” and “Global and Area Studies Seminar”, supervising MPhil theses, and undertaking marking and examining duties. The successful candidate may also convene and teach an existing Global and Area Studies option or develop a new option relevant to their expertise.
The MPhil in Global and Area Studies (GAS) Programme at the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA) is seeking to appoint a full-time, three-year fixed-term Departmental Lecturer in Global and Area Studies from 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
About You:
Applicants should have:
- A PhD in a relevant social sciences field, completed or near completion.
- Research experience with a strong comparative, global, or transnational dimension.
- A demonstrated commitment to contributing to the development of Global and Area Studies.
- A strong publication record appropriate to career stage.
- A clear and ambitious research agenda with strong potential to attract funding.
- Excellence, or the potential for excellence, in teaching and supervision of students at all levels.
- Sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge to develop course materials and research proposals.
- Strong interpersonal, organisational, and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and independently.
- A demonstrated commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and administration.
