Deputy Director [Temporary Cover]

The McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, an independently constituted and endowed world-class research centre within the Department of Archaeology, seeks a Deputy Director through secondment. The post holder will work closely with the Director, other staff and Managing Committee whilst the current Deputy Director is on sabbatical leave, realising an exciting new generation of objectives and operations for the Institute. This position combines research and administrative elements, plus defined opportunities for teaching and PhD student supervision, embedded within one of the world's leading archaeological communities. The post-holder will have a strong research profile, with all fields of archaeology (broadly construed) eligible. Primary roles and responsibilities include leading the daily management of the Institute (together with the Institute's Administrator); deputising for the Director as required; overseeing and coordinating the Institute's publication programme; supporting a vibrant postdoctoral community; and enabling the Institute's research. The successful candidate will be an archaeologist with their own research, as well as someone with good team-working and management skills. Numeracy and IT skills are essential; digital research abilities and editing/publication experience may also be an advantage. The post is available until 30th September 2027. This post is fixed-term for 14 months or the return of the post holder, whichever is the earlier. This position is open only to candidates whose PhD was awarded at least five years before the closing date.

Applications should include a full covering letter indicating the nature of your experience and interest in the position, and how you would contribute to the Institute (including an outline of your current and future research), a curriculum vitae, including an up-to-date list of publications, and the names and contact details of TWO referees who can be contacted to provide a reference. Referees will be contacted by the University as soon as possible after submission of an application.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview with the Appointments Committee and will have opportunities to meet McDonald and Department of Archaeology staff.

Temporary cover: This post is fixed-term until 30 September 2027 or the return of the post holder, whichever is the earlier.

Applications are welcome from internal candidates who would like to apply for the role on the basis of a secondment from their current role in the University.
