The University of Oxford is a stimulating work environment, which enjoys an international reputation as a world-class centre of excellence. Our research plays a key role in tackling many global challenges, from reducing our carbon emissions to developing vaccines during a pandemic.

The Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford, under the headship of Professor Matthew Rushworth, includes over 30 research groups with upwards of 400 undergraduates, graduate students and researchers. Key areas of research include Behavioural Neuroscience, Developmental Psychology, Perception and Cognition, Social Psychology, and Psychological and Brain Health.

Experimental Psychology moved to the new, purpose-built Life and Mind Building in 2025, providing an exciting opportunity to be part of the team involved in the new shared space.

As Deputy Head of Administration and Finance, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the finance and research administration teams, as well as full authority to deputise for the Head of Administration and Finance (HAF) in their absence, combining operational and strategic duties.

What We Offer

As an employer, we genuinely care about our employees’ wellbeing and this is reflected in the range of benefits that we offer including:

  • The opportunity for hybrid working
  • An excellent contributory pension scheme
  • 38 days annual leave
  • A comprehensive range of childcare services
  • Family leave schemes
  • Cycle loan scheme and Green commute initiatives
  • Discounted bus travel and Season Ticket travel loans
  • Membership to a variety of social and sports clubs

About the Role

With the recent move to the Life and Mind Building, this is an exciting development opportunity for applicants wishing to further develop their career in University administration. Reporting directly to the Head of Finance and Administration, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the finance and research administration teams but will be able to develop a broad knowledge of all aspects of administration in a research setting.

Your key responsibilities will be taking the lead with the preparation of the Department’s budget and longer-term forecasts. You will also be undertaking analysis as required and make recommendations on financial strategy to inform decision-making in the Department.

You will also deputise for the HAF, covering any aspect of their role, which will include strategic and operational aspects of finance, administration, HR including case work, people management, and business planning.

About You

To be successful in this exciting role, you will need to have significant experience in financial management and working knowledge of the scientific grant system and the major funding bodies in the research funding sector. Proven experience in preparing financial reports, budgets, forecasts and monitoring budgets is essential.

You will be an expert problem solver with the ability to maintain a flexible and collaborative approach, and a high level of diplomacy at all times.

Strong team leadership and people-management skills are also required, along with the ability to work pro-actively and independently. The ability to organise, prioritise and delegate effectively will be key to your success in this multi-faceted role.

Application Process

You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement detailing how you meet the criteria, CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application.

The closing date for applications is 12 midday on Wednesday 22 April 2026. Interviews will take place on Thursday 14th May 2026 and will be face to face.
