Main aim of this research is to revisit current tyre design, optimisation by alternative materials and structural changes in the layout/reinforcement, and to improve the performance, handling and enhance the safety of vehicle by intelligence effects using artificial intelligence concepts. Objectives of the project include.

• Research about challenges to design and develop an innovative intelligent tyre
• Identify the most widely used tyre for passenger cars in term of construction, type and size and conduct advanced non-linear analysis for performance and handling under various manoeuvring
• Analyse intelligent tyre performance and enhanced safety at various operating conditions and road profiles
• Extract/collate data for tyre pressure, temperature, speed, acceleration and friction
• Optimise the data acquisition and enhance driver feedback using Artificial Intelligence concepts
• Optimise tyre design and performance with various tyre structures/geometry, advanced reinforcement and rubber materials and investigate for low rolling resistance and better fuel economy

Entry requirements:

Applicants should have a First- or Upper Second-Class UK honours degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline such as Automotive/Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering. An MSc with Distinction or Merit in a relevant subject is highly desirable. Knowledge or experience in Modelling and Simulation for dynamics systems or structural optimisation using ABAQUS would be required. Prior knowledge of artificial intelligence or data analysis would be preferred.

The standard minimum IELTS Academic requirement is 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in each band. Some International students are also required to meet UKVI requirements for the appropriate study visa. A valid ATAS certificate (where required) must be secured as a prerequisite to enrolment.

The expected start dates are January 2026 and April 2026.
