About the Project

A joint PhD studentship is available in the research groups of Prof. Dominic Campopiano and Dr Antonia Mey, in the School of Chemistry University of Edinburgh as part of the cross-institutional BioAID Doctoral Training Programme.

BioAID will train the next generation of scientists in Artificial Intelligence and data-driven approaches for translational biocatalysis.

Summary:

Traditional dioxygenation methods such as ozonolysis and metal-based oxidation, while effective, pose significant environmental, safety, and selectivity challenges. Methods that use biocatalysts could offer a greener alternative to oxidise carbon feedstocks into higher value synthetic building blocks. In this project we will develop a range of Alkene Cleavage Enzymes (AlkCEs), a promising but underexplored class of metalloenzymes, as biocatalysts able to cleave alkenes. We will build structural models of the active sites and use MD simulations to explore the details of metal binding and the catalytic mechanism of this family of enzymes. To improve the enzymes we will generate variant libraries and screen these with natural and synthetic substrates using high throughput/high resolution analytical techniques.
